LEXINGTON, Ky. – Five or six opponents is all that Keeneland racing officials are expecting to face Modern Games – but would it really matter if it was 25 or 26? Entries were to be drawn here Tuesday for the Maker’s Mark Mile, the Grade 1 turf race that will mark the 4-year-old debut of Modern Games, the Godolphin superstar who ended a brilliant 2022 with a rousing victory as a 6-5 favorite in the Breeders’ Cup Mile here last fall. Keeneland racing secretary Ben Huffman said early Monday that five other older horses had been confirmed to face Modern Games in the $600,000 Maker’s Mark on Friday, “and we’re working on a sixth.” When it comes to Modern Games, it’s clearly a moot point whether or not the turf-course maximum of 12 starters is attained. Trained by Charlie Appleby, the homebred son of Dubawi is 3 for 3 in North America, all in Grade 1 races, starting with the 2021 BC Juvenile Turf and continuing through the Woodbine Mile last September and the BC Mile in November. His triumph in the BC Juvenile Turf at Del Mar remains a point of controversy, given the California Horse Racing Board still has not issued official clarification on the circumstances that led to him being ruled a non-starter for wagering purposes that day. Back-and-forth from Newmarket in England for every one of his races on this continent, Modern Games returned to the United States early this month in the company of his Godolphin stablemate and fellow Irish-bred With The Moonlight, who runs here Saturday in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley. After clearing quarantine, then training for a short period at Churchill Downs, the pair were on the track well before dawn Sunday at Keeneland in making final preparations for their seasonal bows after being vanned over Saturday afternoon. Traveling lad Chris Connett has been supervising them in Appleby’s stead. :: Bet Keeneland with Confidence: Get DRF PPs, Picks, and Betting Strategies. A 4-year-old gray gelding bred in England, Dr Zempf is trained by Chad Brown, who won this race two years ago with Raging Bull and missed winning last year by a nose when Masen was edged by Shirl’s Speight. The Maker’s Mark will be accompanied on a terrific 10-race card Friday by a second turf stakes, the Limestone for 3-year-old fillies going 5 1/2 furlongs. Another big Saturday card will be anchored by the Jenny Wiley and the final qualifying race toward the Kentucky Derby, the Grade 3 Lexington Stakes (20-8-6-4-2), along with the Giant’s Causeway for filly-mare turf sprinters. Besides With The Moonlight, the Jenny Wiley is expected to get the Brown-trained pair of In Italian and Speak of the Devil, both of whom worked over the local course Saturday, with maybe another three or four fillies and mares going in the 1 1/16-mile turf race. Brown has won five of the last eight runnings of the Jenny Wiley. The 1 1/16-mile Lexington is expected to be headed by Confidence Game, who would be making his first start since an 18-1 upset of the Rebel on Feb. 25 at Oaklawn Park. Jimmy Graham rides for Keith Desormeaux. Another top Lexington contender is Victory Formation, trained by Brad Cox, who already has Angel of Empire, Hit Show, Verifying, and Jace’s Road among the top 20 point-earners for the May 6 Derby. :: Take your handicapping to the next level and play with FREE DRF Past Performances - Formulator or Classic.  Two more stakes, the Grade 2 Beaumont and the Palisades featuring Damon’s Mound, will round out the busy week Sunday. ◗ Mo Stash, who gave trainer Vicki Oliver her first-ever Keeneland stakes victory in winning the Grade 3 Transylvania on the meet opener Friday, is slated to run back in the Grade 2 American Turf on the May 6 Derby undercard. However, Nagirroc, the runner-up, will probably wait instead for the Grade 2 Penn Mile on June 2 at Penn National, trainer Graham Motion said. “We’ll give him a little more time to get over this one,” Motion said. ◗ Hurricane Dream, a flashy winner of a turf allowance Friday for Motion, could run next in the Grade 3 Dinner Party on the May 20 Preakness undercard at Pimlico, said the Maryland-based trainer. The 6-year-old French-bred gelding earned a 97 Beyer in a 4 1/2-length romp. ◗ Retired jockey John Oldham is undergoing inpatient rehabilitation at nearby Cardinal Hill Hospital after suffering a stroke March 21. Oldham, best known for winning the 1980 Blue Grass with Rockhill Native, has worked for many years as a tote technician at Keeneland since riding his last race in 1992. ◗ With only two races carded for turf, there is no Keeneland Turf Pick 3 wager Thursday. Handle on the Turf Pick 3 was $155,811 on Friday and $162,270 on Saturday. :: Want to learn more about handicapping and wagering? Check out DRF's Handicapping 101 and Wagering 101 pages.
