Mocito Rojo wins Delta Mile; Cafe Du Monde takes La. Legacy
Mocito Rojo improved his Delta Downs record to 6 for 8 on Saturday night, darting to a 3 1/4-length win over Line Judge in the $75,000 Delta Mile. It was another 3 1/2 lengths back to favorite Secret Passage in third.
The Delta Mile shared a card with the $100,000 Louisiana Legacy, won by Cafe Du Monde.
Mocito Rojo ($5) was always prominent, pushing Midnight Ruler through fractions of 23.63 seconds for the opening quarter and 47.90 for the half-mile. The winner took command through six furlongs in 1:12.34 and went on to cover the distance on a track rated fast in 1:38.03.
Filemon Rodriguez was aboard for trainer Shane Wilson.
Wilson said Mocito Rojo would come under consideration for stakes at Fair Grounds, including the $75,000 Tenacious on Dec. 22.
Mocito Rojo was winning his second stakes race of the year, behind the $100,000 Evangeline Mile at Evangeline Downs. The son of Mutadda races for Wayne Davis.
Cafe Du Monde ($2.60) delivered as the 2-5 favorite in the Legacy, a one-mile race for 2-year-olds bred in Louisiana. He entered the race off a maiden special weight win at Gulfstream Park that came one start after he ran second to Trophy Chaser in that one’s memorable double-digit-length maiden score, for which he earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 96.
As for Cafe Du Monde, he was content on Saturday night to sit off the pace set by Musada, who took the field through six furlongs in 1:13.80. Cafe Du Monde moved to the fore in the stretch and went on to a two-length victory over Jimi’s a Star. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back to Musada in third.
Cafe Du Monde covered the mile on a fast track in 1:40.95. Gerard Melancon was aboard for trainer Leo Gabriel Jr.
Café Du Monde is a son of New Year’s Day who races for Diamond Racing Inc. and Jay and Joan Janssen.
