Mocito Rojo on course for Evangeline Mile repeat bid

Mocito Rojo, a $10,000 claim turned Grade 3 winner with his victory in last month’s $300,000 Steve Sexton Mile at Lone Star Park near Dallas, will make his next start at his base of Evangeline Downs, trainer Shane Wilson said Wednesday.
“We’ll stay home and run in the Evangeline Mile again,” Wilson said. “He’s never lost on the main track here.”
Mocito Rojo was a 1 3/4-length winner of last year’s Evangeline Mile. The $100,000 race for 3-year-olds and up will be run June 22.
“After that, we’ll look around the country,” Wilson said.
Wilson said Mocito Rojo will come under serious consideration for the Grade 3, $200,000 West Virginia Governor’s Stakes on Aug. 3 at Mountaineer Park.
In advance of the Evangeline Mile, Mocito Rojo will probably have two works, said Wilson.
“He trains hard every day, maintains his fitness,” he said.
Wilson trains Mocito Rojo for Wayne Davis. The horse’s regular rider is Filemon Rodriguez.
◗ There is no live card Friday night at Lone Star, with the track set to run a holiday program Monday led by the new $100,000 Lone Star Park Turf Stakes.
◗ The Budweiser Clydesdales are scheduled to appear at Will Rogers Downs in Claremore, Okla., on Friday and Sunday.
