Mobil cruises to easy Halton win

Ron Gierkink|Sep 06, 2004

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Mobil toyed with his three rivals in capturing Sunday's $128,750 Halton Stakes, one of six stakes on the Woodbine card for graduates of local yearling sales.

Mobil ($2.30) pressed front-running Crosspoint through slow fractions in the nine-furlong turf event. He assumed command at the quarter pole and drew off for a 3 1/2-length score over Lenny the Lender. The final time was 1:46.97.

Todd Kabel, who rode Mobil for owner Gustav Schickedanz and trainer Mike Keogh, won five races on the card, including three yearling sale stakes.

"We had a great trip," said Kabel. "He was the class of the field, and was supposed to win easy."

* Kabel also rode Forever Grand to a come-from-behind victory in the $131,375 Kenora, which was the gelding's second straight win in the six-furlong event.

Forever Grand was claimed from his previous start for $32,000 by owner Winston Penny and trainer Noel Randall. He paid $7.60 on Sunday and covered the distance in 1:09.72. Shaws Creek ended up 1 1/2 lengths back in second, while 3-5 favorite Twisted Wit was fourth in the seven-horse field.

* One for Rose ($3) blew by front-running Winning Chance at the 70-yard pole en route to a 2 1/4-length tally in the Algoma, which contained just two other fillies and mares. One for Rose ran 1 1/16 miles in 1:43.54 under Emile Ramsammy. Sid Attard trains her for Tucci Stable.

* Just in Case Jimmy ($9.40) rallied five wide for a 1 3/4-length triumph over favored Cool N Collective in the $134,125 Elgin. Richard Dos Ramos rode Just in Case Jimmy, who beat five other 3-year-olds and up, running 1 1/16 miles in 1:44.56.

* Moonshine Justice ($4.50) and Kabel prevailed in a stretch-long duel with Olympia Fields to take the $136,125 Simcoe for 2-year-olds. It was the third consecutive stakes score for Moonshine Justice, who completed seven furlongs in 1:24.68, while defeating eight opponents.

* Simply Lovely ($14.80) won her maiden by 2 1/4 lengths over Victorious Ami in the $136,000 Muskoka, a seven-furlong race for 2-year-old fillies. Imagine the Ruckus, the 3-5 favorite, was a fading fourth in the eight-horse field. The final time was 1:25.36. Steven Bahen rode Simply Lovely for owner Rocco Marcello and trainer Bob Tiller.
