Mo Trump has stakes experience on his side for Tin Cup Chalice Stakes
Mo Trump wheels back just one week after contesting a stakes at Finger Lakes and has a class edge for Tuesday’s $29,900 Tin Cup Chalice Stakes for 2-year-olds going six furlongs.
Mo Trump, who is trained by M. Anthony Ferraro, has made all four of his starts at Finger Lakes. He won his second start, then rallied for second to Acoustic Ave in the $97,854 Aspirant Stakes on Sept. 26. Mo Trump was no threat to the 9 1/4-length winner, but finished 3 1/2 lengths in front of the third-place horse.
The Aspirant was the local prep for the $158,579 New York Breeders’ Futurity on Oct. 17, which Acoustic Ave won by a nose over Andiamo a Firenze. Mo Trump raced evenly to finish sixth of eight.
Mo Trump is the only entrant in this field of seven with stakes experience. Regular rider Keiber Coa will be aboard.
Allure of Money and Macdonough are the only others in the field to have won a race. Allure of Money’s 11 3/4-length maiden victory at Finger Lakes on Oct. 17 earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 69, the best in this field. Mo Trump’s best is a 54 from the Aspirant. Allure of Money’s maiden win came at a mile and 40 yards.
The field is completed by Color Commish, a first-time starter who has been working bullets; debut starter American A. P.; and the maidens Charlies Medal and Gold Templar.
The Tin Cup Chalice is named for the Finger Lakes-based winner of five stakes, including New York’s Big Apple Triple of the Mike Lee at Belmont, New York Derby at Finger Lakes, and Albany at Saratoga. He also won the Grade 2 Indiana Derby. Tin Cup Chalice was honored as the 2008 New York-bred champion 3-year-old male, although he was outpolled for horse of the year honors by older Grade 1 winner Commentator. Tin Cup Chalice was euthanized following a training accident in the spring of 2009 at Finger Lakes.
Presque Isle Downs
Just over the western New York border, the unbeaten Gordian Knot will look for a second consecutive stakes victory in the $100,000 Mark McDermott Stakes for Pennsylvania-bred juveniles going six furlongs on Tuesday at Presque Isle Downs.
Gordian Knot, who is trained by Guadalupe Preciado, was a seven-length debut winner at Parx, and then won the Prince Lucky Stakes there. He earned Beyer Speed Figures of 77 and 72, respectively, easily the best in this field. He is now moving from Parx’s dirt to the synthetic track at Presque Isle.
