ARCADIA, Calif. – Mo Forza completed a sweep of the November and December graded stakes for 3-year-olds on turf in Southern California with a victory in Saturday’s Grade 2 Mathis Brothers Mile at Santa Anita. Mo Forza won the Grade 2 Twilight Derby here on Nov. 2, on Breeders’ Cup weekend, and won the Grade 1 Hollywood Derby at Del Mar on Nov. 30 in his first start at the highest level. Joel Rosario was aboard for the Twilight Derby win and again in the $202,106 Mathis Brothers Mile. Rosario had Mo Forza ninth of 11 for the first half-mile and moved rapidly into contention with an aggressive move with a half-mile remaining. “He got into the bridle when I went into the turn,” Rosario said. Mo Forza was timed in 1:34.26 and returned $4.40 to win. He earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 98. Mo Forza took the lead in early stretch and had a one-length advantage with a furlong remaining. Originaire, eighth with a quarter-mile remaining, closed well under jockey Umberto Rispoli to finish second, beaten 1 1/4 lengths. “He’s a lovely horse,” Rispoli said. “He had a good run. I was trying to get position on the inside. I had to hold up a little bit. I got a nice spot to go through. The winner was too strong.” The Mathis Brothers Mile was the first stakes mount in the United States for Rispoli, a former champion jockey in Italy who rode in Hong Kong until earlier this month. Rispoli made a permanent move to California in mid-December. Neptune’s Storm, a three-time stakes winner on turf, finished third at 3-1, 2 3/4 lengths behind Mo Forza. Barristan the Bold was fourth, followed by Proud Pedro, Ocean Fury, Never Easy, Bob and Jackie, Loafers Boy, and Sash. Mo Forza has won four consecutive races, a streak that began with a win in a maiden special weight race at a mile on turf here on Sept. 29. Owned by Bardy Farm and OG Boss and trained by Peter Miller, Mo Forza has earned $519,460 in his nine-race career.
