ARCADIA, Calif. - Mizumi has had a perfect late spring at Santa Anita for Charles and Susan Chu and trainer Bob Baffert. After winning her debut in a maiden race at 6 1/2 furlongs on May 2, Mizumi won her first start in a stakes in Saturday’s Grade 3 Summertime Oaks for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles. Ridden by Juan Hernandez, Mizumi closed from fourth on the backstretch and third on the turn to beat five rivals by 3 3/4 lengths. “That was pretty impressive for a second time out,” Baffert said. “Juan rode with a lot of confidence. Hernandez moved Mizumi outside of those two entering the stretch. Wolf Hill, a maiden after nine starts, led by a half-length with a furlong remaining, but was no match for Mizumi in the final sixteenth. “She was in an awkward position and she found another gear and took off,” Baffert said of Mizumi. Wolf Hill (10-1) held second, finishing 2 3/4 lengths ahead of 7-1 Bank Shot, who has been second or third in four consecutive stakes for 3-year-old fillies this year. Daring Pursuit, who set an early pace of 23.31 seconds for the opening quarter-mile and 46.74 for a half-mile, faded to finish fourth and was followed by Marjoram and Sugaree in a field of six. Mo’Em Down, second in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar last August, was withdrawn by trainer Peter Miller. Mizumi’s win in the $100,500 Summertime Oaks increased her career earnings to $99,000. She was bred by Charles Chu. The family races as Baoma Corp., and also own Nysos, the winner of the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap at Saratoga on June 6. Hernandez swept the two stakes at Santa Anita on Saturday, beginning with the Grade 3 Daytona Stakes on Freedom’s Not Free. Hernandez had four wins from five mounts on the 12-race program.
