Mistake-free Whizkey Glasses proves best in Golden State Million Futurity
The well-traveled Whizkey Glasses benefited from less than ideal trips by two key rivals to win the first major stakes of his career in Sunday’s $1.11 million Golden State Million Futurity at Los Alamitos.
Ridden by Jesus Ayala for trainer Monty Arrossa, Whizkey Glasses ($9.20) broke sharply from the outside post in a field of eight and led throughout to win by 1 1/2 lengths over 18-1 Significant Dynasty. In Hott Pursuit, also trained by Arrossa, finished third at 7-1, a nose behind Significant Dynasty.
Just a Kool Boy, the 8-5 favorite, had a troubled start and did not recover. Chizum, the 7-2 second choice, raced in traffic midway through the 400-yard race and finished fifth.
Whizkey Glasses, owned by Dunn Ranch, was timed in 19.87 seconds, and has won 5 of 7 starts and earned $520,014. Earlier this year, Whizkey Glasses won the $57,000 Easy Jet Stakes at Remington Park and was later fifth in the $200,000 All American Juvenile at Ruidoso Downs, the consolation to the $3 million All American Futurity.
The Golden State Million Futurity lost its fastest qualifier when Golden Boi was withdrawn from consideration after a bout with colitis following the time trials on Oct. 10. Mineshaft, another qualifier, did not race after sustaining a knee injury.
Golden Boi and Mineshaft are trained by Valentin Zamudio, who was left without a runner in the Golden State Million Futurity. Golden Boi has improved in the last week, but will not race again this year, Zamudio said.
