Missy P. thriving after throat surgery, pointing to La Brea

ARCADIA, Calif. – Recent throat surgery has done wonders for lightly raced Missy P., who is likely to launch her comeback in the Grade 1 La Brea Stakes for 3-year-old sprint fillies on Dec. 26, opening day of the Santa Anita winter meet.
“I could change my mind and go in” an allowance race, trainer Richard Mandella said. “But the way she’s training, I’m going to go ahead and try” the La Brea.
Missy P. won her March debut by more than nine lengths with a 90 Beyer Speed Figure, finished second next out, then next to last in the Desert Code against colts on June 6. That was her last start.

Missy P. blew the doors off Q B One in a five-furlong, 58.60-second gate drill Dec. 1, followed by a six-furlong work Wednesday in 1:15.60. Q B One is an unraced 3-year-old colt who is the first foal produced by Beholder.
Rivals for Missy P. in the La Brea could include John Sadler-trained stakes winner Livingmybestlife. Bob Baffert expects to nominate three to the La Brea, including Grade 2 winner Private Mission, Grade 1 Los Alamitos Starlet winner Varda, and Grade 3 winner Beautiful Gift.
