ARCADIA, Calif. – Missed the Cut, winner of two Grade 3 turf marathons at Santa Anita earlier this year, worked five furlongs on dirt in 1:00.20 on Monday in advance of a scheduled departure on Wednesday for the Royal Ascot meeting in Britain later this month. Trained by John Sadler, Missed the Cut is rated as a 12-1 chance with British bookmakers for the Group 2 Hardwicke Stakes for older horses at 1 1/2 miles at Ascot on June 22. Sadler said on Sunday that Missed the Cut will be ridden by James Doyle, who is based in Britain. :: Access morning workout reports straight from the tracks and get an edge with DRF Clocker Reports Missed the Cut finished second in the Grade 2 Elkhorn Stakes at 1 1/2 miles on turf at Keeneland on April 20 in his most recent race. Earlier this year, Missed the Cut won the San Marcos Stakes at 1 1/4 miles at Santa Anita in February, and the San Luis Rey Stakes at 1 1/2 miles in March. As of Monday, Continuous (3-1) and Middle Earth (5-1) were the leading contenders in the future book for the $318,100 Hardwicke Stakes. Continuous, trained in Ireland by Aidan O’Brien, won the Group 1 English St. Leger at Doncaster last September, and was fifth in the Group 1 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris last October in his most recent start. Middle Earth, a winner of 4 of 7 starts for trainers John and Thady Gosden, won his 2024 debut in the Group 3 Aston Park Stakes at 1 1/2 miles at Newbury Racecourse in Britain on May 18. The Sadler-trained Eagles Flight, a half-brother to 2022 Horse of the Year Flightline, worked a half-mile in 48 seconds on Monday for an intended start at the Del Mar summer meeting. A 3-year-old, Eagles Flight won his debut in a six-furlong maiden race by 2 3/4 lengths at Santa Anita on May 27. Denman to call Del Mar meet Announcer Trevor Denman will describe the action at Del Mar for the 40th season this summer, the track confirmed in a statement on Monday. Denman, 71, most recently called races at Del Mar last summer. He has not called an autumn meeting at the track since 2019. Denman has been replaced during those seasons by Larry Collmus.
