Miss Sunset, You're Late team up in Generous Portion

DEL MAR, Calif. – Miss Sunset, a 2-year-old filly trained by Jeff Bonde, had a perfect day on July 30.
She was on the also-eligible list for a maiden race for California-bred fillies but drew into the field that morning. Starting from the outside in a field of 10, Miss Sunset led throughout and won by 4 3/4 lengths.
“Away she went,” Bonde said.
Miss Sunset will have her stakes debut in Saturday’s $150,000 Generous Portion Stakes for California-bred 2-year-old fillies at Del Mar. She is part of a strong team for Bonde, who also runs You’re Late, the winner of the California Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association Stakes on July 29.
“Both of those fillies have their own merits,” Bonde said. “They’re both doing very well.”
The fillies have running styles that could lead to a one-two finish in the six-furlong Generous Portion. While Miss Sunset is quick, You’re Late closed from third in a field of five to win the CTBA Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs.
“You’re Late showed a dimension to stalk and punch,” Bonde said. “She moved her game up.
“Miss Sunset is a straightforward horse. She acts like a nice filly. Everybody that’s been on her has liked the filly.”
You’re Late, by Lucky Pulpit, races for owners and breeders Larry and Marianne Williams. Miss Sunset, by Into Mischief, is owned by Alan Klein and Phil Lebherz.
The Generous Portion drew only six runners, two of whom are maidens. I’ll Be Around is the only other runner with stakes experience, having finished last in the CTBA Stakes.
