Miss Southern Miss taking it easy ahead of Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf

ARCADIA, Calif. – Miss Southern Miss will have a quiet week in advance of the $1 million Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf at Santa Anita on Friday.
Trainer Keith Desormeaux said on Saturday that Miss Southern Miss will not have a workout in the days before the one-mile race but will jog and gallop on a daily basis. On Saturday, Miss Southern Miss was jogged on the infield training track.
Miss Southern Miss won the Surfer Girl Stakes at a mile on turf at Santa Anita on Oct. 10 to join the list of leading contenders in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf.
“She’s had a long year,” Desormeaux said. “I could have worked her, but I thought it was best to take the fresh approach.”
Miss Southern Miss worked a half-mile in 48.80 seconds on Oct. 22, which will be her only workout before the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf.
Owned by Pete Cantrell, Miss Southern Miss has won 2 of 5 starts and earned $164,600.
Two hopefuls for the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf worked at Santa Anita on Saturday. Madam Dancealot, the winner of the Group 3 Dick Poole Stakes in England last month, worked a half-mile in 48.20 seconds. Trainer Richard Baltas timed Madam Dancealot through a final quarter-mile in 23 seconds and galloping out five furlongs in 1:01.60. The BC Juvenile Fillies Turf will be Madam Dancealot’s first start in the United States.
Sweeping Paddy, fourth in the Grade 3 Jessamine Stakes at Keeneland in her stakes debut, worked five furlongs in 59.40 seconds. Trained by Dale Romans, Sweeping Paddy is not assured of a berth in the race.
There were 21 fillies pre-entered in the BC Juvenile Fillies Turf, with 14 selected for the field. As of Saturday, Sweeping Paddy was the third alternate. Sweeping Paddy won her turf debut in a maiden race at a mile by 12 1/4 lengths at Kentucky Downs on Sept. 10.
The Juvenile Fillies Turf has a talented list of pre-entered fillies, including the stakes winners Coasted, Intricately, La Coronel, Lull, New Money Honey, Roly Poly, Spain Burg, and Victory to Victory.
