Miss Prospector wires Hong Kong Jockey Club Stakes

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – Miss Prospector pulled off an “upset” in the $50,000 Hong Kong Jockey Club for 3-year-old fillies. She actually went off as the favorite in the 1 1/16-mile race, but her owner and trainer, Glen Todd, preferred his Princess of Cairo who finished third.
As the five horses were being loaded into the starting gate Todd, who does bet significant amounts on his horses, said, “I wonder what somebody knows that we don’t.”
She paid $5.50.
With Scott Williams aboard, Miss Prospector broke sharply and posted a half-mile time of 46.80 seconds under little pressure. She held a 2 1/2-length lead over Walkinthewalk at the six-furlong mark and was never threatened while drawing off to win by 3 1/4 lengths over Walkinthewalk. Princess Cairo trailed the field and was starting to rally but clipped heels and stumbled badly at the quarter pole. After gathering herself, she re-rallied to get up for third.
The final time was 1:45.90.
A Washington-bred daughter of Harbor the Gold, Miss Prospector was bought by Todd for $30,000 out of the September Washington yearling and mixed sale.
