Miss My Rose gets the nod in DQ prequel

ARCADIA, Calif. -- At lunchtime Saturday, a horse who finished second in a stakes was promoted to first after the winner was disqualified for causing interference. The incident gave the promoted winner a first career stakes win.

The scenario occurred in the $85,300 Angels Flight Stakes at Santa Anita when Miss My Rose was promoted from second to first after Sneaking Out was disqualified from first. The Angels Flight Stakes had a post time of 12:32 p.m.

Less than four hours later, on a much grander stage, Country House was promoted from second to first in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs when race winner Maximum Security was ruled to have caused interference on the final turn.

Miss My Rose, who is trained by Phil D’Amato, had her stakes debut in the Angels Flight Stakes at seven furlongs for 3-year-old fillies.

Sneaking Out won by three-quarters of a length under jockey Rafael Bejarano, but was ruled to have bumped Miss My Rose, who was ridden by Aaron Gryder. The Santa Anita stewards needed six minutes to change the order of finish.

While watching the race, D’Amato thought the order of finish would be changed.

“I saw my filly lose momentum and saw Gryder have to shift out of the saddle,” he said.

Owned by breeder Alex Venneri and Anthony Fanticola, Miss My Rose won her debut in a maiden special weight race at six furlongs on March 30. She ran so well that day that she was the 9-5 second choice in a field of five in the Angels Flight.

D’Amato said Miss My Rose is a candidate for the Grade 2 Summertime Oaks, a $200,000 race for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on May 26.

“I think she wants to go two turns,” D’Amato said.

Sunday, the D’Amato-trained Gregorian Chant recorded an eventful win in an allowance race with an $80,000 claiming option at 1 1/8 miles on turf for 3-year-olds.

Ridden by Flavien Prat, his first winner since being promoted on Country House in the Kentucky Derby, Gregorian Chant veered out sharply at the start, but recovered to stalk the pace on the backstretch. Gregorian Chant closed from last in a field of five to win by 2 1/4 lengths as the 3-2 favorite.

Gregorian Chant won his debut in an all-weather race at seven furlongs at Dundalk, Ireland, last December and joined D’Amato’s stable the following month. Sunday’s race was his first start in the United States.

Gregorian Chant is likely to have his stakes debut in the $150,000 Cinema Stakes for 3-year-olds at 1 1/8 miles on turf on June 2.
