Miss Marvic looks to fill stakes hole on her resume

Adam Goss|Jun 10, 2005

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - The red-hot Miss Marvic returns to Assiniboia Downs in search of her first stakes win in Sunday's $40,000 La Verendrye for older fillies and mares at six furlongs.

After two losses to begin her career here in 2003, Miss Marvic won her maiden in her 2004 seasonal bow at Stampede Park before returning to Assiniboia Downs and winning 4 of 7 last summer, including three in a row during the later stages of the season.

This season, the 4-year-old Miss Marvic, a daughter of Happy Trap, has won 4 of 4 at Stampede Park, all against claimers ranging in price from $15,000 to $36,000.

Miss Marvic, who has been on the lead at every point of call in all four of her starts this year, should have pace company Sunday from Siberian Falstaff, Ruby Slew and perhaps Heldinhighesteem.

Another horse looking for her first stakes win is Siberian Falstaff. A winner in 7 of 11 starts, she has never finished worse than third.

This year the 5-year-old Siberian Falstaff won an allowance race here on opening day, May 1, then finished second behind Ericka's Lass after dueling with Ruby Slew in the prep for this race on May 23.

Ericka's Lass, who also runs Sunday, stalked a duel between Siberian Falstaff and Ruby Slew en route to narrowly winning the prep. A 4-year-old daughter of Limit Out, Ericka's Lass won three stakes last year, including two at Sunday's six-furlong distance.

After finishing third behind Siberian Falstaff and Ericka's Lass in her first start of the year on May 1, Lt. Regent has won two in a row over second-level optional $16,000 claiming foes. Like her stablemate Ericka's Lass, Lt. Regent could benefit from a contested pace.

Another horse who could benefit from a lively early pace is last year's La Verendrye winner, Remiewaterbluz. A 6-year-old daughter of Lucky So n' So, Remiewaterbluz finished fourth in the prep in her only start of the year.

Also entered in the La Verendrye are Pete's Surprise, Strike an Image, Tamorons Blade, and Low Key Affair.
