Miss Deplorable faces elders in Incredible Revenge

Miss Deplorable wins the 2018 Blue Sparkler Stakes
Bill Denver/Equi-Photo Miss Deplorable won the Blue Sparkler Stakes last out in her Monmouth debut.

Miss Deplorable will try to stay perfect at Monmouth Park on Saturday when she takes on the class-droppers Malibu Stacy and Always Thinking in the $75,000 Incredible Revenge, a 5 1/2-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares.

The only 3-year-old in the field of eight, Miss Deplorable is trained by Delaware Park-based Baltazar Galvan, who shipped her to New Jersey to score a 12-1 upset over her own age group in the Blue Sparkler Stakes on July 21.

Galvan, who races primarily at Tampa Bay Downs during the winter, has stabled at Delaware each season since 2014. In 2013, the year he began training, he was based at Colonial Downs for that track’s most recent Thoroughbred meet.

The Blue Sparkler was the first stakes win for both Miss Deplorable and Galvan. It came in Galvan’s first trip to Monmouth.

Miss Deplorable is 2 for 2 this summer. In her start prior to the Blue Sparkler, she scored a maiden win at Delaware. In the Blue Sparkler, she stalked the pace of 9-5 Elizabeth Darcy, challenged on the turn, gained the advantage in midstretch, and scored by a length.

The distance of the Incredible Revenge may suit her better than Malibu Stacy or Always Thinking.

Malibu Stacy has speed, but the Incredible Revenge will be the shortest distance she has raced in 23 starts. In June at Belmont Park, she was forwardly placed throughout the Grade 3 Intercontinental going seven furlongs and finished fourth, beaten 1 1/4 lengths.

Last time out, she set the pace in a high-level six-furlong optional claimer at Belmont but was overtaken and had to settle for second. Malibu Stacy is trained by George Weaver, who in the last month has won the Grade 3 Lake George at Saratoga and the My Frenchman Stakes at Monmouth.

Always Thinking rallied to finish fifth in the Intercontinental, a nose behind Malibu Stacy. She will likely have to close from well back at this considerably shorter distance for trainer Tom Albertrani.

A MATCH Series void

While some divisions of the MATCH Series have been interesting to follow, that has not been the case in the filly and mare turf-sprint category.

The Incredible Revenge is the fourth of five legs in the series, but not a single runner in the race has competed in any of the prior races. As a matter of fact, by Saturday evening only two horses – Smiling Causeway and Pretty Perfection – will have raced in two of the four legs.

To be eligible for series-end owner and trainer bonuses, a horse must start in at least three races. The final filly and mare turf-sprint contest is the Sensible Lady Turf Dash at Laurel Park on Sept. 15.
