Into Mischief, Not This Time fillies top OBS breeze show
Fillies by reigning leading general and juvenile sire Into Mischief and early leading freshman sire Not This Time were the sole category leaders as the seven-session under-tack preview show for the Ocala Breeders' Sales Co.'s spring sale of 2-year-olds in training concludes.
The OBS spring sale, which was postponed from April, runs Tuesday through Friday and effectively restarts the juvenile sale season in North America after it was upended by the coronavirus pandemic. This is considered OBS’s flagship sale and is something of a bellwether for the national marketplace, as it typically offers the largest catalog of the season and offers broad spectrum of horses for buyers at all levels. There are 1,315 hips in the catalog, including supplemental entries, for this year's renewal, which will be particularly keenly watched this year as a market barometer.
A filly by Into Mischief breezed a furlong in 9 3/5 seconds on the Ocala Training Center's all-weather Safetrack surface for the fastest time at that distance, the traditional measuring stick for commercial juveniles. Into Mischief, a perennial leading juvenile sire for Spendthrift Farm, claimed his first leading general sire title in 2019 and currently leads this year's general sire list by North American earnings.
The filly, consigned by bloodstock agent Randy Bradshaw, is out of Shanon Nicole, winner of the Indiana Grand Stakes and Remington Park Oaks; her three additional stakes placings were highlighted by a third in the Grade 3 Rachel Alexandra Stakes behind champion Untapable. The Majestic Warrior mare, whose first starter is a winner, is from the extended family of multiple graded stakes-winning millionaire Dry Martini.
Behind the fastest filly, a logjam of 15 juveniles tied for the second-fastest furlong at 9 4/5 seconds, including another filly by Into Mischief. Four freshman sires were represented in the group, with fillies by Frosted and Not This Time and colts by California Chrome and Speightster lighting up the stopwatch. Rounding out the 15 were colts by Ghostzapper, Honor Code, Lemon Drop Kid, and Tapizar; two fillies by Street Boss; and fillies by Liam's Map, Majesticperfection, Munnings, and Uncle Mo.
Another filly from the first crop of Not This Time worked a quarter-mile in 20 1/5 seconds on Monday to hold the sole fastest time for that distance. Not This Time, who stands at Taylor Made Farm, is off the mark with two winners from his first four starters to lead his freshman class early.
The filly, who is consigned by Top Line Sales, as agent, is out of Sheza Smoke Show, winner of the Grade 3 Senorita Stakes and dam of one winner from two starters to date. The Wilko mare's first two dams are stakes winners.
A colt from the first crop of Laoban and a colt by First Samurai each worked a quarter in 20 2/5 seconds to tie for the second-fastest time.
Beyond the furlong and the quarter-mile breezes, the most prevalent standards at the breeze shows, a handful of juveniles worked three furlongs, led by a Dialed In colt who went in 32 4/5 seconds. The colt, consigned by Arindel Farm, is a full brother to Grade 2-placed Filly Joel.
Colts by Carpe Diem and Currency Swap tied for the second-fasted time as each went in 33 seconds.
