Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male Mineshaft has been retired from stud duty at the age of 26. The stallion is in excellent health and will be pensioned at the farm. A leading son of the legendary A.P. Indy, Mineshaft was bred and raced by William S. Farish, James A. Elkins, Jr. and W. Temple Webber, Jr. Foaled at Lane’s End Farm in May of 1999, Mineshaft was produced from the multiple Grade 1 winning and producing mare Prospectors Delite, winner of the Acorn S. (G1) and Ashland S. (G1) and dam of millionaire Tomisue’s Delight, a full sister to Mineshaft. Mineshaft started his racing career in England under the tutelage of John Gosden at age 2 and was brought home to the U.S. after showing a strong affinity for dirt surfaces. Trained by Neil J. Howard, Mineshaft developed into a top racehorse at age four, a season which saw Mineshaft win 7 of 9 races, including the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1), Pimlico Special (G1), Suburban H. (G1), Woodward S. (G1). Voted Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male, Mineshaft came home to Lane’s End to begin his career at stud. From 20 crops of foals, Mineshaft has progeny earnings of over $101,000,000. His top horses include Senor Buscador, winner of the Saudi Cup (G1), earner of over $12,000,000 and now a stallion at Lane’s End. Mineshaft has sired eight Grade 1 winners overall, including Effinex, It’s Tricky, True Timber, Dialed In, Discreetly Mine, Weep No More and Bondholder. Lane’s End Farm President Bill Farish said, “Mineshaft is a tremendous horse in all aspects – a champion racehorse and a top sire. We are so pleased that he is retiring from stud in wonderful health and will enjoy a long retirement at his birthplace.” Farish continued, “Mineshaft means so much to our family and to the farm. When he arrived home at Lane’s End following his retirement from racing, literally everyone on the farm gathered at the stallion barn to celebrate his accomplishments and to welcome him home. He is a very special horse” Mineshaft is a Top 20 Lifetime Active Sire and a Top Five General Sire in 2024.
