Mine That Star shines bright in Winsham Lad Handicap
Mine That Star became the latest stakes winner produced by the mare Mining My Own when the half-brother to Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and multiple Grade 1 winner Dullahan captured the $65,000 Winsham Lad Handicap on Sunday at Sunland Park.
The one-mile race was for 4-year-olds and up.
Mine That Star ($10.40) tracked the pace through an opening quarter in 24.19 seconds, then went on to take the field through a half-mile in 47.24 and six furlongs in 1:10.85. He fought to maintain the advantage in the stretch and went on to cover the distance on a fast track in 1:35.04.
Mine That Star won by 3 3/4 lengths over Convention, while it was another length back in third to highweight Zestful.
Francisco Amparan was aboard Mine That Star for trainer Nancy Summers.
Mine That Star races for Judge Lanier Racing. The horse is by Pioneerof the Nile. Mine That Star has now won 4 of 9 starts for earnings of $111,478.
Last year, Mine That Star finished third in the Zia Park Championship in November.
The Winsham Lad launched Sunland Park’s handicap series. It continues with the $75,000 Curribot at 1 1/16 miles on March 5 and the $100,000 Sunland Park Handicap at 1 1/8 miles on April 2.
