Mine That Bird inducted into Canadian Racing Hall of Fame
ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird was among the inductees into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame at the Mississauga Convention Center on Wednesday night.
Mine That Bird was Canada’s champion 2-year-old in 2008. He was sold by trainer Dave Cotey prior to his final 2-year-old start in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile, and trainer Chip Woolley famously sent him out to capture the 2009 Kentucky Derby at 50-1. The son of Birdstone never won again, but he did finish second in the Preakness and third in the Belmont Stakes. A movie on his remarkable story, “50-1,” was released in 2014.
The other Thoroughbred-industry inductees were breeder Robert Anderson; jockey Stewart Elliott, who rode classic winner Smarty Jones; Roger Laurin, who trained inaugural Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Chief’s Crown; and handicapper Jim Bannon.
The inductees on the Standardbred side were H. Charles Armstrong, Bill Gale, and Harry Eisen, along with the horses Artsplace and J Cs Nathalie.
