Bloodstock professional Jacob West has had confidence in Mindframe throughout the horse’s life, first as a racing prospect and now as a stallion prospect. “He’s never given us any reason not to have confidence,” he said. West wears multiple hats in the Thoroughbred industry. As a bloodstock agent, he represents prominent clients, including owner Mike Repole, at various sales. As the stallion seasons and bloodstock manager for historic Claiborne Farm in Paris, Ky., a role he was named to in 2024, he promotes the farm’s roster and scouts incoming talent. Those roles have converged several times in recent years. For 2025, Claiborne’s new stallions included Grade 1 winner Bright Future, who was raced by Repole and Vinnie Viola’s St. Elias Stable. This year, Mindframe, purchased as a yearling for those partners with help from West and campaigned in their colors, steps into the vaunted first stall on the left in Claiborne’s main stallion barn – the one formerly home to Bold Ruler, Secretariat, Easy Goer, and Unbridled. Mindframe, with his deep connections to West, is one of two Grade 1 winners new to Claiborne for 2026. The other is turf star Johannes, campaigned as a homebred by Joe and Debby McCloskey. Claiborne announced June 1 that it had secured the breeding rights to Mindframe. That missive came a little less than a month after he won the Grade 1 Churchill Downs Stakes at seven furlongs, defeating a host of graded stakes winners, including Book’em Danno, who is considered one of the nation’s leading sprinters, and Nysos, who went on to win the Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile. A little less than a month after the stallion announcement, Mindframe landed another Grade 1 win at Churchill, this time around two turns. He defeated champion Sierra Leone, as well as Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan and Dubai World Cup winner Hit Show, in the Stephen Foster. “He opens up so many doors for so many breeders,” West said. “There’s nothing you can take away from him – physical, pedigree, these races that he’s put together.” Multimillionaire Mindframe, who will stand for $50,000 in his introductory season – tied for the second highest-priced newcomer in the country – was first or second was first or second in seven of his nine career starts. That included a classic placing, as he was the runner-up in the 2024 Belmont Stakes in just his third career start. He can be forgiven for hiccups in his final two starts, the Jockey Club Gold Cup and Breeders’ Cup Classic. In the Gold Cup, he lost his rider soon after the start in a chain reaction bumping incident. In the Classic, he finished fifth in a salty field in his first real race in more than four months. Mindframe is by prominent sire Constitution, a son of perennial leading sire Tapit who is already developing his own successful branch of the sireline. “Tiz the Law’s a son of Constitution,” West said, naming a successful young sire. “You see what he’s doing as a stallion now. It gives you a lot of confidence that [Constitution] could go on and be a sire of sires. That Tapit sireline, and [Mindframe] is out of a Street Sense mare. He’s drop-dead gorgeous. He’s the whole package.” Johannes is also from an emerging branch of a sireline, as he is by champion, classic winner, and rising star Nyquist, the most successful son of champion Uncle Mo. Johannes’s female family also made him attractive to Claiborne. His dam, Cuyathy, is by the consistent Congrats – a full brother to successful Claiborne sire Flatter. Cuyathy’s first three dams are all by former Claiborne sires, as the mare is out of Dance Darling (by Devil’s Bag) who in turn is out of Danzig Darling (by Danzig), who in turn is out of Middlemarch (by Buckpasser). “He has Claiborne genetics all throughout his page,” Claiborne president Walker Hancock said. “The McCloskeys are wonderful people that operate in an old school breed-to-race way that resonates with us. It’s a great fit and we couldn’t be more excited to debut Johannes alongside Mindframe.” Millionaire Johannes retired with a record of nine wins from 16 starts. His six graded stakes victories were highlighted by the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile in 2024, a season in which he was also second by three-quarters of a length in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. Johannes, whose advertised fee is $10,000, will participate in a new “Breed Twice, Breed for Life” incentive program for Claiborne. Owners who breed a total of two mares to Johannes during his first two breeding seasons, and have two live foals and pay those two stud fees before the due date, will earn a lifetime breeding right to the young stallion.
