Mind Your Biscuits punctuated a campaign as one of North America’s top sprinters last year by being named the New York-bred Horse of the Year by the New York Thoroughbred Breeders Inc. The 4-year-old son of Posse won four of nine starts during his sophomore campaign for earnings of $740,400. Mind Your Biscuits won his maiden by 7 1/2 lengths in his 2016 debut at Aqueduct in April, then finished second in the Mike Lee Stakes at Belmont Park two starts later. He scored a 9 1/4-length allowance win at Belmont, followed by his first graded stakes victory in the Grade 2 Amsterdam Stakes at Saratoga. The second half of the colt’s campaign included runner-up efforts in the Grade 3 Gallant Bob Stakes and Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Sprint and concluded with a win in the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita. He most recently won the Group 1 Dubai Golden Shaheen on March 25 on the Dubai World Cup card. Mind Your Biscuits was initially campaigned by the partnership of Joaquin Guerrero’s J Stables and the Summers family of Chad, Scott, Hope, and Daniel. Sol Kumin’s Head of Plains Partners bought into the horse prior to the Breeders’ Cup Sprint. Robert Falcone Jr. trained the colt during the 2016 season, and he is now trained by Chad Summers. Mind Your Biscuits was bred by the Baccari family’s Jumping Jack Racing and was foaled at Cedar Ridge Farm in Pine Plains, N.Y. The colt’s dam, the unraced Toccet mare Jazzmane, was named New York’s Broodmare of the Year. In addition to being named New York-bred Horse of the Year, Mind Your Biscuits took home 3-year-old male and male sprinter honors. Also earning multiple awards was Haveyougoneaway, who was named the state’s top female sprinter and older dirt female. The Congrats mare’s season was highlighted by a win in the Grade 1 Ballerina Stakes. Chester and Mary Broman were named New York’s breeders of the year for a fourth time. Among their top graduates was the homebred Highway Star, a daughter of Girolamo who was named New York’s top 3-year-old filly. The Bromans had previously won the award in 2004, 2011, and 2014. The statebred honors were announced at the NYTB’s annual awards dinner on Monday at the Saratoga National Golf Club in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. Winners were chosen by a ballot of New York turf writers, handicappers, chart callers, and racing analysts. Following is the complete list of equine and human winners.
