Mind Your Biscuits drills five furlongs for Whitney

ELMONT, N.Y. – After skipping a workout last week, Mind Your Biscuits picked up his preparation for next month’s Grade 1, $1.2 million Whitney Stakes by working five furlongs in 1:00.01 Friday morning over Belmont Park’s main track.
Working after the mid-morning renovation break, Mind Your Biscuits worked by himself under Joel Rosario, going his opening three furlongs in 36.42 seconds and getting his final quarter in 23.59. He proceeded to gallop out six furlongs in 1:12.62, seven furlongs in 1:26.43, and a mile in 1:41.79.
“I wanted to work him on a little bit of a deeper track,” trainer Chad Summers said. “That was kind of a tiring track out there this mornin. We got what we needed and we’ll just look ahead to the next one.”
Summers said he didn’t work Mind Your Biscuits last week because track management had sealed both the main track and training track in preparation for rain.
Summers planned to ship Mind Your Biscuits to Saratoga on Saturday and will work him seven furlongs over the main track next Friday.
Mind Your Biscuits, beaten a nose by Bee Jersey in the Grade 1 Metropolitan Handicap going a mile here on June 9, will be trying 1 1/8 miles for the first time in the Whitney, scheduled for Aug. 4.
“Everything he’s shown us to date is that he can do it,” Summers said. “He’s shown brilliance in the morning, but he’s always shown the ability to gallop out well.”
Others under consideration for the Whitney include Backyard Heaven, McCraken, Pavel, and possibly City of Light, who is also under consideration for the Grade 1 Forego on Aug. 25.
