Millfleet best in Bunty Lawless

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Millfleet ($10.50) notched his second Woodbine stakes in 11 days in Sunday's $146,750 , a one-mile turf event for Ontario-sired runners.

With apprentice Jill Scharfstein aboard, Millfleet raced three-wide on the lead in unison with Bold Kris and Crease Infraction. Millfleet took control after fractions of :23.21 and :46.56 seconds, and held off favored Tusayan in deep stretch to prevail by three-quarters of a length.

Obliquity finished third in the 14-horse field, from which Dashing Admiral was scratched. The final time over yielding ground was 1:39.07 seconds.

"He broke a little sharper than I expected him to, and was quite aggressive early," said Scarfstein. "I just let him go and be happy where he was. I was a little concerned being three-wide, but I had a lot of horse turning for home, and when I gave him a tap on the shoulder, he really accelerated."

Millfleet, the lone 3-year-old in the lineup, earned $88,050. He captured the Deputy Minister Stakes on the main track in his previous outing.

It was the second win on Sunday's card for Scharfstein, owner Margaret Squires and trainer Hugo Dittfach, who also took the allowance prep for the Woodbine Slots Cup with Millfleet's half-brother, Norfolk Knight.
