Mikki Queen wins second straight in Japanese Oaks
Mikki Queen, who was excluded from the $1,553,842 Japanese 1000 Guineas at Hanshin Racecourse on April 12 because of a lack of earnings, won the $1,667,457 Japanese Oaks at Tokyo Racecourse on Sunday for her second consecutive win.
Ridden by Suguru Hamanaka, Mikki Queen, the 5-1 third choice in a field of 17, closed from off the pace to win the Grade 1 Japanese Oaks by three-quarters of a length over Rouge Buck, the 8-5 favorite. Culminar, who was second in the Japanese 1000 Guineas, finished third.
Let’s Go Donki, who won the 1000 Guineas, finished 10th.
Mikki Queen, a filly by Deep Impact has won 3 of 5 starts for owner Mizuki Noda and trainer Yasutoshi Ikee.
Rouge Buck is by the Sunday Silence stallion Manhattan Café and is out of Ginger Punch, who won the Eclipse Award as the champion older female of 2007 in a career highlighted by a win in the Breeders’ Cup Ladies’ Classic at Monmouth Park that year.
