Mico Margarita sets Evangeline record in Oak Hall Stakes
OPELOUSAS, La. - Mico Margarita returned to his winning ways in impressive fashion Saturday night at Evangeline Downs, taking the $60,000 Oak Hall Stakes by 8 3/4 lengths in track-record time. Unitas held on for the place after dueling for the early lead in the six-furlong dash, a neck in front of Knockitdownhard.
Rated early under Diego Saenz, Mico Margarita ($3.20) ranged up on the outside turning for home and quickly kicked well clear, stopping the timer in 1:08.37. That eclipsed the previous record of 1:08.63 set by Lattin Devil in April of last year.
Trained by Steve Asmussen, Mico Margarita won for the first time this year after three consecutive fourth-place finishes at Oaklawn Park, including in the Hot Springs and King Cotton stakes. The 4-year-old son of Run Away and Hide has now won 4 of 16 starts and banked over $310,000, all for owner J. Kirk Robison.
