Michigan’s Thoroughbred, Quarter Horse, and Arabian horsemen’s groups announced their year-end awards for the 2013 racing season. The Michigan Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (MTOBA) revealed its divisional winners on its website, while the Great Lakes Quarter Horse Association (GLQHA) and Association of Racing Arabian Breeders (A.R.A.B.) of Michigan held a joint year-end dinner on Jan. 18 at Yankee Springs Golf Course in Wayland, Mich. All three breeds raced at mid-Michigan mixed breed track Mount Pleasant Meadows in 2013. For a third straight year, MTOBA did not select a Horse of the Year, though it did name divisional champions and honored the state’s leading owner and breeding operations. The equine awards finished in step with the winners of the 2013 Michigan Sire Stakes races, held on Sept. 22 at Mount Pleasant. Power of Titus earned his second consecutive title as Michigan’s champion older male. The 7-year-old Secret Romeo gelding won four of eight starts in 2013 for earnings of $64,305. His season was highlighted by a 6 ½-length victory in the Sire Stakes’ older males division, in which he established a track record at Mount Pleasant for 1 1/16 miles for a second consecutive year. Delcor Waite owns and trains the gelding. Charlies Fire was named Michigan’s champion older female, and was the highest earner among this year’s divisional winners, with seven victories in 11 starts for $72,565. Co-bred, owned and trained by Ronald Allen Sr., the 7-year-old Fire Blitz mare finished her campaign winning seven of eight starts, finishing second in her lone defeat. That run was highlighted by a front-running 1 ½-length victory in the older female division of the Sire Stakes. Henry Mast’s Mast Thoroughbreds LLC was named Michigan’s owner of the year, with three of the year’s six divisional champions running under his colors. Mast swept the 2-year-old divisions with filly Afternoon Prayer and colt Al’s Prayer, and champion 3-year-old male Art I Awesome continued his run of success after finishing as Michigan’s top juvenile male last year. Campbell Stables, owned by Jerry and Lisa Campbell, earned breeder of the year honors for a second straight year, as the breeder or co-breeder of sophomore female winner Im All Business and older female Charlies Fire. Because of their small breeding programs, the Quarter Horse and Arabian awards were based strictly on performance at Mount Pleasant, and were open to horses bred in any state, unless specifically noted. Among the GLQHA award winners, Dash of Cajun Magic was the recipient of two honors, taking home the organization’s Chart Book champion older gelding award, as well as champion Michigan-bred older gelding. The 5-year-old son of Panther Mountain won two of 10 starts for $15,045 racing as a homebred for Michael and Carrie Bale. Michael Bale also trains the horse. Uno Machine, a perennial leading paint horse in Michigan, was once again named the state’s champion aged paint mare. The 6-year-old Dos Poruno mare won two of four starts during her 2013 campaign for $7,580. Uno Machine was homebred in Michigan by Dave and Shirley Gates, who were also named GLQHA champion high point owners, and trained by Dave Gates. Catch Me Ridin Dirty was named A.R.A.B. of Michigan’s Horse of the Year for the third time in five seasons of racing, having previously earned the title in 2009 and 2010. The 8-year-old son of Aransas HF was also named Michigan’s champion older male for a second time, emulating his 2011 season, and he earned Michigan-bred male of the year honors for the fourth time in five years. Catch Me Ridin Dirty was retired at the end of his 2013 campaign to become an endurance horse. He was bred and trained by Nicole Holst and owned by Jolene Sweet.
