Miami, Oklahoma get bet

Dave Tuley|Oct 07, 2002

LAS VEGAS - When the professional bettors in Las Vegas take a shot at the Stardust's opening NCAA football numbers on Sunday nights, they usually concentrate on smaller conferences, looking for what they perceive as softer numbers or opportunities to set up a middle with offshore books.

That thinking is reflected in the fact that bettors jumped on Nevada +13 1/2 at Hawaii and bet it down to +10 1/2, and also Western Michigan +3 vs. Central Florida and bet it down to +1 1/2.

However, the early bettors also got involved with some of the major colleges this week, including two of the biggest games of the upcoming weekend. No. 1-ranked Miami-Fla. opened as a 13-point home favorite over rival Florida St. and was promptly bet up to 14, while Oklahoma took money in its Big 12 battle at Texas, opening at + 3 1/2 and getting bet down to + 3.

In the NFL, the Bills and Raiders have gone over the total in all of their games so far this season, including the Raiders' 49-31 win on Sunday that went over the total of 53 1/2 in the third quarter. So it was no surprise that bettors jumped on the over for those two teams' games this upcoming weekend. The Bills-Texans total opened at 42 and got bet up to 43, while the Raiders-Rams total was bet from 46 to 48.

Those two games also saw movement in point-spread wagering, as bettors sided with their opponents: the Texans took money, going from +9 1/2 to +8 1/2 against the Bills and the Rams were bet from +7 1/2 to +7 against the Raiders. The Texans and Rams are both home dogs to their high-scoring visitors.

Other NFL dogs taking early money were the Dolphins (bet from +4 to +3 1/2 at Denver) and Seahawks (bet from +4 1/2 to +3 1/2 at home vs. the 49ers) in the Sunday and Monday night games.

Last week: It was a break-even kind of week. The early college line moves went 8-8, including splitting the two biggest moves (San Jose St. was a winner, while USC was a loser). The Florida St. game is considered a push as the Seminoles' 17-point win fell on the opening number. For the season, college line moves are now 48-61 (44 percent). The NFL lines move went 3-3 (2-2 on sides and 1-1 on totals) heading into the Monday night game, in which the Bears saw early action, getting bet from -1 to -1 1/2. For the season, NFL line moves are 18-15.
