BOYNTON BEACH, Fla. – The 3-year-old Mexikoma makes his return to the starting gate in an allowance race on Saturday’s Fountain of Youth card at Gulfstream Park. Last seen in November when he finished sixth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita, Mexikoma breezed a half-mile Tuesday morning at Palm Meadows in 49.05 seconds. Trainer Rick Mettee said “he looked really good” on Tuesday in the last of a long and steady series of breezes over the past three months. Mexikoma drew the outside post in a field of 10 for Saturday’s 1 1/16-mile sixth race. Among his opponents are Wicked Strong, who finished third in the Grade 2 Remsen last year but finished far back in the Grade 2 Holy Bull in January; Tonalist, a four-length maiden winner at Gulfstream last month; and the Todd Pletcher-trained debut winners Constitution and Matterhorn. [ROAD TO THE KENTUCKY DERBY: Prep races, point standings, replays] Mettee said he’s looking for Mexikoma to finish well but that he’d “be a little surprised” if he won. “Drawing 10 of 10 here is a tough draw, and it’s a two-turn race at Gulfstream,” he said. “You know speed’s been holding up, and there doesn’t seem to be a lot of pace. “If we can get him running at the end and galloping out good – get a race into him – and he comes out of it good, I’d be happy with that.” When asked about the Florida Derby as a possible next option if Mexikoma runs well Saturday, Mettee said, “Hopefully he’d be good enough to go in some sort of race like that, but this race will tell us a lot both fitness wise and really how good he is.” Mexikoma won a Delaware Park maiden race by 14 3/4 lengths last year for trainer Michael Dilger and then was bought by Team Valor International and turned over to Mettee before the Breeders’ Cup. Rydilluc returns in Canadian Another horse making his first start this year on Saturday is Rydilluc, who makes his first start in more than six months in the Grade 3 Canadian Turf. Rydilluc, a 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro, hasn’t raced since finishing 11th in the Secretariat Stakes at Arlington Park last August. Trainer Gary Contessa said he’s pleased with the way Rydilluc has been training over the Palm Meadows turf course. On Feb. 12, Rydilluc breezed a sharp seven furlongs in 1:22.05. Rydilluc is “right where we want him” Contessa said Tuesday. The field for the Canadian also includes Guys Reward and Salto, one-two in the Grade 3 Tampa Bay, and Mr. Online, who has won three straight including the El Prado here. Rydilluc’s biggest wins last year came in the Grade 3 Palm Beach at Gulfstream and the Penn Mile at Penn National. Rydilluc came out of the Secretariat with sore ankles, Contessa said, and was given time off at a farm in Ocala, Fla. [Clocker Reports: Get Mike Welsch’s clocker reports from Gulfstream Park and Palm Meadows] As for long-term plans this year, Contessa believes that Rydilluc could be a “sensational miler but certainly can go further,” as evidenced by his win in the 1 1/8-mile Palm Beach Stakes. Itsmyluckyday nears comeback Itsmyluckyday, 15th in the Kentucky Derby and second in the Preakness Stakes last year, is nearing his return to the races. He has not raced since fracturing his pelvis in the June 16 Pegasus Stakes at Monmouth Park. Itsmyluckyday began working in the middle of December with some three- and four-furlong moves, and had his first five-furlong work Feb. 11. That morning, he breezed in 1:01.00 and galloped out strongly in 1:13.40 for six furlongs and 1:28.00 for seven furlongs. Itsmyluckyday is scheduled to breeze another five furlongs Thursday. According to trainer Eddie Plesa Jr., “He’s two, maybe three, works away from being as close to 100 percent as a trainer could get a horse.” As for Itsmyluckyday’s first race back, Plesa mentioned the one-mile Gulfstream Park Handicap on March 8 as a possibility, but said he’s looking for a softer spot. “That’s going to come up a bit salty,” he said of the Gulfstream Park Handicap, “and I think I’d prefer to find an easier spot. I’m not looking to throw him to the wolves for his first race back.”
