Messina's jockey license revoked

Jockey Robert Messina had his license revoked for six months on Wednesday by the New York State Racing and Wagering Board after appealing a 60-day suspension for allegedly holding a horse during a race at Finger Lakes in 2003.

Messina, 42, was initially suspended by the Finger Lakes stewards for 60 days late in 2003 for holding Strictly Physical in a $7,500 maiden claiming race on Oct. 7, 2003. Strictly Physical finished fifth in that race, beaten 9 1/4 lengths, and won his next start in a $4,000 maiden claiming race by 13 1/4 lengths.

Mike Hoblock, the chairman of the board, said after the meeting that the board voted to revoke Messina's license after videotapes showed "a very unusual ride." The board has the power to amend stewards' rulings if they are appealed.

"I think it's most important to protect the integrity of the race," Hoblock said.
