Merry Meadow puts in final work for Breeders’ Cup

ELMONT, N.Y. – Merry Meadow earned a fees-paid berth in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Sprint by virtue of her victory in the Grade 2 Princess Rooney Stakes at Gulfstream Park in July. On Monday at Belmont Park, Merry Meadow had her final workout for the Breeders’ Cup, breezing four furlongs in 47.10 seconds over the main track.
Merry Meadow worked following the renovation break. Under Gustavo Delgado, she went in even splits of 23.50 seconds and 23.60 before galloping out five furlongs in 1:00.77. Last week, Merry Meadow worked five furlongs in 1:01.66.
“I gave her an easier five-eighths work last week, which we don’t normally do, and I thought she would do a little more today, and I thought she galloped out very strong today, like she was going to go five-eighths,” trainer Mark Hennig said.
Hennig said it is typical for him to give Merry Meadow her final breeze 12 to 14 days out from her race, so she will simply gallop from here on out.
Hennig also said Joe Bravo would ride.
