Melvin Peterson, jockey, dies

Melvin Peterson, a retired jockey who had his greatest success on the Southern California circuit, died in Phoenix on Monday at age 83. Peterson won the 1947 Santa Anita Handicap on Olhaverry and rode in two Kentucky Derbies, finishing fourth on Billings in 1948 and 10th on Ky. Colonel in 1949.
