Medina Spirit has first work since June 14

Medina Spirit, who tested positive for the banned medication betamethasone following a win in the Kentucky Derby on May 1 at Churchill Downs, worked a half-mile in 49.80 seconds on Thursday at Del Mar, his first recorded workout in more than six weeks.
Medina Spirit has not started since a third-place finish in the Preakness Stakes on May 15 at Pimlico. Trained by Bob Baffert, Medina Spirit worked three furlongs in 37.60 seconds on June 14 at Santa Anita.
Baffert did not immediately return a request for comment on Thursday morning regarding Medina Spirit’s workout or race plans for the colt, who has won 3 of 7 starts for owner Amr Zedan.
The medication case involving Medina Spirit’s positive in the Kentucky Derby has been the subject of recent court proceedings. Baffert has argued that the presence of the medication was caused by the use of an ointment for the colt’s skin condition and not by an injection.
