Medina Spirit fires another bullet

Medina Spirit, the first-place finisher in the Kentucky Derby on May 1 at Churchill Downs, worked six furlongs in 1:11.80 on Thursday at Del Mar.

This was the second consecutive week that Medina Spirit had a bullet work. Medina Spirit worked a half-mile in 59.60 seconds on Aug. 5.

Trainer Bob Baffert did not return a phone call seeking comment about Medina Spirit’s training, but the pattern of workouts since late July suggests the colt is rapidly moving closer to his first start since a third-place finish in the Preakness Stakes on May 15 at Pimlico.

Del Mar has one graded stakes for 3-year-olds on dirt at its summer meeting – the Grade 3 Shared Belief Stakes, a $100,000 race at a mile on Aug. 29.

Medina Spirit tested positive for the medication betamethasone after the Kentucky Derby, and the case is currently the subject of court proceedings. Betamethasone is a corticosteroid that is not allowed to appear in post-race tests.
