Mean Mary won't face males in U.N. and will point to Glens Falls or Beverly D.

Mean Mary, one of the leading older female turf-route horses, won’t run in the United Nations Stakes next Saturday. Trainer Graham Motion said several weeks ago he would consider the mare for the U.N., and she was nominated to the race, but Motion on Friday said her connections would take a pass and instead aim for the Glens Falls, a 1 1/2-mile turf stakes on Aug. 7 at Saratoga, or point for the Beverly D. at 1 3/16 miles the next Saturday at Arlington.
Motion said Mean Mary was to breeze this weekend at Fair Hill in Maryland. She won her 2021 debut in the Gallorette at Pimlico and came back with a game victory in the June 4 New York Stakes, holding on to beat Irish invader Thundering Nights, who went back home and promptly won the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes in late June.
“We’ll nominate to Arlington and the Glens Falls,” Motion said. “It’s just a little tricky deciding where to go after that. The timing is a little odd.”
