The Meadows: Big days for Tetrick, Wallin in PA Sire Stakes Championships

Tim Tetrick and Lucas Wallin dominated Saturday's $253,000 Pennsylvania Sire Stakes Championships for 3-year-olds at The Meadows, teaming up to win a pair of the events with Pour Mea Double and Manon and Tetrick adding another one with Captain Cowgirl.

Keg Stand (Andy McCarthy) led in the colt and gelding trot, posting fractions of 28, 57, and 1:24 4/5 before taking a clear lead into the lane. However, Tetrick sent Pour Mea Double three-wide from second-over on the final bend and was able to chase down Keg Stand in the final stride, winning by a head in 1:53. Dandy (Jacquie Ingrassia) held third after stalling out from first-over.

"I knew the leader was getting away from me, but my horse has been closing good every week, and he really closed good to earn that win," Tetrick said. "He's just unlucky. He's a little 'trippy,' and he's raced against some of the top ones. You have to ride the rail quite a bit with him."

A Bar Hopping colt bred by Winbak Farm, Pour Mea Double is trained by Wallin for owners J&T Silva Stables, LLC., Peter Kleinhans, Daniel Kraus, and Dreamlover Ab. This was Pour Mea Double's fourth career win, he has now put away $269,900, and he paid $6.60 to win as the 2-1 second choice.

Tetrick and Wallin were back to win the filly trot with Manon in 1:53 1/5. Manon moved to the point after the 27 3/5 opening quarter, kept control through a 56 2/5 half and a 1:24 3/5 three-quarters, and came home in 28 3/5 to defeat a gaining Luisella (David Miller) by a neck. Dreamonhigh (Yannick Gingras) got third.

"The outside was showing speed, and so long as the early leader was happy to follow me, that's all I was worried about. I thought he would with my being the favorite," Tetrick said. "She got there and relaxed and raced a good race. She'll go with the top ones for sure."

Manon is a daughter of Bar Hopping bred by Hanover Shoe Farms and owned by Harbor Racing Stable LLC. She has compiled a record of 5-1-2 from 11 starts, pushed her bankroll to $327,372, and returned $4.80 to win as the favorite.

Captain Cowgirl defended her sire stakes title from a year ago in the filly pace, prevailing in 1:50 1/5. Tetrick put her on the point passing the 27 1/5 quarter, and after middle-half splits of 55 4/5 and 1:23, Captain Cowgirl opened up in a 27 1/5 last quarter, winning by 5 1/4 lengths over Sweet Treasure (A. McCarthy). Smuggle Tina (D. Miller) rallied for third.

Jim King Jr. trains Captain Cowgirl, a Captaintreacherous filly bred by Kentuckiana Farms and Pinske Stables, for owners Jo Ann Looney-King and Kenneth Frieder. She made her tenth appearance in the winner's circle, she boosted her earnings to $542,038, and she paid $3.40 to win as the 3-5 choice.

"I didn't pay her into much else," King said. “I'm a little cheap. I like to have a one-way pocket. I'm not very good at it, but that's what I like. We have no reason not to bring her back next year. I don't know if she'll go to all the big dances, but she'll be plenty useful."

In the colt and gelding pace, Night Hawk (D. Miller) brushed from fourth to first beyond the 26 3/5 opening quarter and stayed in front through a 54 4/5 half, a 1:21 4/5 three-quarters, and into the lane. However, Dexter Dunn cut Fourever Boy loose three-wide late on the final bend after follwing Layton Hanover (Matt Kakaley) from second-over, and Fourever Boy got up through the stretch drive to score by a length in 1:49 1/5. Greatest Ending (Mark MacDonald) closed well for second after getting shuffled on the inside, and Night Hawk was third. Tetrick was on heavily-favored Mad Max Hanover, but he didn't fire today and wound up seventh.

"He'd been racing so good and had to do a lot of dirty work," said Twaddle. "He hasn't been able to get that trip. Today it worked out."

He indicated the colt would be pointed to the Simcoe and the Little Brown Jug.

The victorious colt by Sweet Lou was bred by Birnam Wood Farms and is co-owned by trainer Tim Twaddle in partnership with Micki Rae Stables. Fourever Boy is now a three-time winner from 27 trips behind the gate, he has stashed away $475,416, and he returned $16.20 to win as a 7-1 shot.
