Three-year-old pacing filly Sylvia Hanover improved to 13-for-14 lifetime by winning one of the Tompkins-Geers divisions that took place on Saturday night at the Meadowlands.
Zanatta (Brian Sears) cut fractions of 28, 56 3/5 and 1:23 in the $31,600 event and built up a 5 1/2 length gap on Sylvia Hanover at three-quarters, as driver Bob McClure bided his time in fourth before bringing her to the outside. Through the stretch Sylvia Hanover reeled in Zanatta and then went by her to win by a length in 1:50. Ucandoit Blue Chip (Scott Zeron) finished third.
"I was pretty happy with her, but Zanatta did get a pretty good jump on her. She's a winner and she got her head in front," McClure said. "I think she went back-to-back 26 second quarters at the end, but that's the position we were in. She gets the job done every time."
The Hanover Shoe Farms-bred daughter of Always B Miki sent her earnings to $952,395 for trainer Mark Steacy and owner Hudson Standrdbrd Stb Inc. Sylvia Hanover paid $2.10 to win.
Charleston (Tim Tetrick) won the other $32,100 3-year-old filly pace in 1:51. She was three-wide to get the lead past the 27 2/5 opening quarter, kept command through a 56 2/5 half and a 1:24 2/5 three-quarters, and got to the wire a nose ahead of a closing Front Page Story (McClure). Racin Hungry (Joe Bongiorno) got third.
The Diamond Creek Farm/Racing homebred is by Downbytheseaside and is trained by Brett Pelling. She has a record of 8-7-2 from 17 outings, has pocketed $490,347 and returned $2.80 to win as the 2-5 choice.
