Meadowlands: Stars of today, tomorrow take to the track for qualifiers
Some older horses of note joined talented 2-year-olds during eight qualifying races on Saturday morning at the Meadowlands.
2016 Hambletonian and Trotting Triple Crown winner Marion Marauder (Scott Zeron) was out for a spin this morning for trainer Paula Wellwood and won in 1:52. Marion Marauder has made two unsuccessful starts so far this year and will be looking for improvement out of this race.
Fan Hanover winner Treacherous Reign (Dexter Dunn) faced off with fellow Tony Alagna trainee Odds On St Lucie (Corey Callahan) in the morning's finale and won on the lead in 1:51 1/5. The 3-year-old filly by Captaintreacherous should be in the Shady Daisy on Hambletonian Day.
Guaranteed, a Hambletonian eligible who moved to the Per Engblom barn recently, romped to a 1:52 2/5 victory in the sixth. Jimmy Takter was at the controls of the Muscle Hill colt.
As for the baby races, Tall Dark Stranger (Yannick Gingras) impressed again for trainer Nancy Johansson, ripping off a 1:52 4/5 win out of the pocket. The Bettor's Delight-Precocious Beauty colt was a $330,000 Lexington buy for Crawford Farms and their partners.
Brittany Farms homebreds won the two other pacing events, with Captaintreacherous-Acquavella filly Sail By debuting with a rallying 1:55 2/5 triumph for Tim Tetrick and Alagna, and Shining Beauty (Tetrick / Linda Toscano) finishing stoutly from the pocket to triumph in 1:56. Shining Beauty is another daughter of Captaintreacherous and out of the great American Ideal mare American Jewel.
Muscle Hill-To Dream On filly Cover Girl, a $70,000 Lexington buy, won her second straight for trainer/co-owner Paul Kelley and driver Zeron, stopping the clock in 1:59 4/5, and Father Figure, a Father Patrick-Day For Night colt, also won again on the front-end for trainer-driver Harry Landy. Father Figure was a $20,000 acquisition in Lexington.
