Hellabalou pulled a stunning upset at odds of 81-1, and then Southwind Gendry scored at 10-1 in the two $50,000 Meadowlands Pace eliminations for 3-year-old colts and geldings on Saturday night at The Big M. Driver Andrew McCarthy blasted Hellabalou to the point from the outside post seven, then yielded to One Eight Hundred (Tim Tetrick), the heavy favorite) passing the 26 4/5 opening quarter. Racing over a surface drenched by heavy rain, One Eight Hundred backed down the middle-half to 56 1/5 and 1:23 2/5, but he couldn't hold off a first-over attack from Charlie May (Brett Miller), who took over the top spot in upper stretch. Charlie May tried to set sail from there to the wire, but McCarthy was able to fan out with Hellabalou, and the longshot had pace to go with the space, rallying by to prevail by half a length in 1:49 2/5. Charlie May had to settle for second, and Chase H Hanover (Brian Sears) collected third. One Eight Hundred faded to fourth, and Rockyroad Hanover (Dexter Dunn) got up for fifth. "I had a look across and nobody looked like they were that dedicated to leaving hard," said McCarthy. "I thought I'd bounce him out of there and get him to the front and try and hide him. I was just trying to really get him into the final, but he raced great. He had a lot of punch in the stretch. "I've driven this horse a lot. He's very, very talented. He's been racing good but without showing it on the paper. He's definitely got a shot." Eddie Dennis trains Hellabalou, a Sweet Lou colt, for owner Eric Good. Bred by Andray Farm and Sergent Stables LLC. and a $42,000 purchase at the 2019 Standardbred Horse Sale, Hellabalou has a record of 4-1-1 from 15 tries, and he has put away $93,886. He paid $165.60 to win. In the second elimination Southwind Gendry (Yannick Gingras) made front from post seven, and he led through soft fractions of 27 1/5, 56 1/5, and 1:23 3/5 without facing an outside challenge. In the lane Lawless Shadow (Mark MacDonald) and Perfect Sting (David Miller) took up the chase from second and third, but Southwind Gendry held sway to the wire, defeating Lawless Shadow by a neck in 1:49 1/5. Perfect Sting was third, followed by American Courage (Matt Kakaley) and Abuckabett Hanover (A. McCarthy). "Going on the track with Murph (assistant trainer Shannon Murphy), I was planning on taking him back and just maybe one-move him, just to get in the final for next week, but then nobody was leaving," remarked Gingras. "I took a shot out of there, but he was more willing today. He hasn't been wanting to leave all year really, but today I planted him on the gate, and he left out of there on his own. "He's healthy. I think that's the difference. He switched to the aluminium shoes, too. That probably helped him a little bit, too, but I'm just happy he's back because he's a great horse. He's definitely better following horses. On the front he's a little bit lazy. Of course those fractions helped tonight, but you can see even late, he's just waiting on them to get close to him. No doubt next week it gives me options, if I have to cut it, I can cut it again, but if I can get him a nice second-over trip, that'd be good, too." Southwind Gendry is an Always B Miki gelding trained by Ron Burke for owners Burke Racing Stable LLC., Phil Collura, Knox Services Inc., and J&T Silva- Purnel & Libby. Southwind Gendry, bred by Southwind Farms LLC., was a $30,000 buy at the 2019 Lexington Selected Yearling Sale, and he has now won 13 times from 18 lifetime starts to go with a baknorll of $734,841. He returned $22.00 to win.
