Meadowlands: Market Share wins inaugural TVG Free For All for trotters

Driver Tim Tetrick took nothing for granted in the $500,000 TVG Free For All final for trotters. He shot Market Share to the front and never looked back on Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

Sent off as the 6-5 favorite, Market Share was fast off the gate and quickly forced fellow leaver Uncle Peter into the pocket. The opening quarters came on the board in 26 2/5 and 55, with Market Share in complete control and the outer flow just starting to develop.

Mister Herbie, sent off at 7-5, got away last and began to move just before the half. Unfortunately he would pick up excess cover from Arch Madness (first-over) and Guccio. When three quarters came on the board in 1:23 1/5 and Arch Madness could not apply serious pressure, it was evident that this might be Market Share’s moment to shine.

In the stretch, Market Share opened up a couple of lengths and hardly had an anxious moment, besting Uncle Peter by 3/4 of a length in 1:51. Guccio was third.

“That was my plan going in,” said Tetrick of his decision to leave fast off the gate. “I don’t do it very often with him but he responded nicely tonight.”

Market Share, who has now earned over $3 million in his career for owners Richard Gutnick, T L P Stable and William Augustine, is certainly coming back to race next year at five and could be headed overseas to Sweden for the prestigious Elitlopp.

“The first thing we are going to do is bring him back next year and we will go from there,” said trainer Linda Toscano before talking about the Elitlopp. “We are definitely thinking about it. They invited us and it would be one of those once in a lifetime kind of things.”

Market Share returned $4.60 to win.
