Manchego improved her record to three-for-three this year and When Dovescry posted in second straight victory by taking Saturday night's pair of $30,000 divisions of the third leg of the Miss Versatility Series for trotting mares at the Meadowlands. With Dexter Dunn off this weekend, Yannick Gingras got a chance to drive Manchego for the first time since September 7, 2019 at Scioto Downs, and she won handily in a season's-best 1:50 4/5. Positioned fifth through opening-half panels of 27 and 55 1/5, Gingras had Manchego out and moving first-over before the half, and she moved up steadily into second as A Fancy Face (Scott Zeron) hit three-quarters in 1:24. Manchego sustained her forward advance to take command before entering the lane, and then she drew off with powerful strides, winning by four lengths over a pylon-skimming Felicityshagwell S (Ake Svanstedt). No Mas Drama (David Miller) was the third-place finisher. "It was great getting to drive her again," said Gingras. "Winning the [2018 Hambletonian] Oaks with her was great. I have great memories with her. "She has developed into a different horse, and it was a pleasure to get to sit behind her. She really is two fingers to drive in the hole. She raced like a true professional." Nancy Takter trains Manchego, a 6-year-old Muscle Hill mare, for owner Black Horse Racing. This was Manchego's 36th career win, and she has now earned $2,855,126. She was the 1-9 favorite and paid $2.20 to win. In the other split, When Dovescry (Miller) worked her way into the lead just after the 26 4/5 opening quarter, then put on the brakes to get to the half in just 56 seconds. When Dovescry continued to be well-rated around the last turn and to the 1:24 4/5 three-quarters, and while Next Level Stuff trotted determinedly from first-up in the final quarter, When Dovescry wouldn't be passed in the sprint to the wire, winning by a neck in 1:51 4/5. Ab'sattitudexpress (Andrew McCarthy) came up the cones with trot and was a solid third. "If there had been a hole early, I would have taken it," said Miller. "But I let her settle, and she went on to the lead easily. "When Timmy came at me, I knew it would be a nice battle. In the first leg she went by us [on May 8], but my horse was pretty game tonight." A 5-year-old daughter of Muscle Hill, When Dovescry is trained by Brett Pelling for owner John Lengacher. When Dovescry is now a 14-time winner in her life, and she has pocketed $1,159,083. When Dovescry returned $4.20 to win as the favorite. The Miss Versatility Series has three remaining preliminary rounds at the Meadowlands on July 17, July 31, and September 3, and the final is on September 23 at Ohio's Delaware County Fair. --quotes courtesy of the Meadowlands--
