Spot Play: SIGNAL HILL (7th)

Race 3 - $125,000 Guaranteed Pick Five Pool ($28,786 Carryover)

Race 8 - $50,000 Guaranteed Pick Four Pool

MEET STATS: 63 - 214 / $386.50 (-$41.50)

BEST BETS: 9 - 17 / $32.50 (-$1.50)

Race 1

(1) FOX VALLEY STEFFEN drops from an outside post versus the top level of Amateur horses to the inside facing mostly second-tier foes. This looks like a prime spot for Jennifer Lappe. (2) REAL DJ HANOVER failed on the front when last seen three weeks ago. This 6-year-old is quite capable of stepping up. (8) URIEL blitzed a cheaper field last time; capable again. (10) ROCKIN REDFORD also drops out of the top amateur division. Can Marohn work out a trip from the outside post?

Race 2

(8) ELEVENTEEN showed good speed before fading from post 10 last time. She moves in a couple of spots here and picks up a catch-driver. (2) PRESIDENTIAL ZETTE rallied well last Friday and should offer decent value here. (10) BREAK FREE landed Brett Miller over my first and second picks. Maybe he knows something I don’t. (6) RECEIVERSHIP & (4) LOTHARIO are contenders if they stay on stride; very iffy.

Race 3

(2) DRIVING MISS CRAZY made a bid and tired last time as the chalk, but at least she didn’t show any signs of a break. This is a very dull field and I’m expecting driver Austin Siegelman to be very aggressive here. (3) A PENNY EARNED raced well from an outside post most recently and now moves inside tonight. (5) HAILEYSGONEDANCING finished evenly last time after a slow start. She can do better here.

Race 4

This is a tricky race. (1) E L DARTSMYBOY ships in from Saratoga and drops in claiming price slightly. I’m not sure if he is as fast as some of the others, but he does have a quick enough early step and this race will likely go slower than usual due to very cold temperatures. (6) WELLWESAID has won two straight and is the clear favorite. That said, I’m just not in love with him at a short price. (7) MAY I CRUISE WEST has a string of in-the-money finishes and would be more interesting to me if Brett Miller gunned him off the gate this time. (8) FLY’N WITH ROYALTY has good gate speed; maybe.

Race 5

(2) CAUFIELD simply laid an egg as the .70 favorite a few weeks back. If everything stayed the same I’d likely look elsewhere, but the switch to Brett Miller has me intrigued enough to take a second chance. (1) MOONLIGHT COCKTAIL is back down in class where she rallied nicely for third two starts back. (7) NEW JERSEY VIKING was used hard and paid the price last out. This could be the last chance to show his best before hitting the sales floor on Jan 15. (4) TRUE FRIENDS is another horse in the sale. Four-year-old gets class relief here and could easily wake up in a hurry.

Race 6

(3) BEAUTIFUL LADY has a string of races where I can come up with an excuse for her failure. She drops a notch tonight and really should have every chance at victory. (2) MELANIES SHARKETTE gets a new set of hands at the controls. Maybe that serves as a impetus to get her started. (5) MISQUED catches a field with quite a few potential early speed players and her game has been closing. Things could work her way. (10) PURITY is one of those speed horses. When feeling good she is capable of going a long way.

Race 7

(5) SIGNAL HILL never quite lived up to his $250,000 price tag as a yearling. He raced OK following a three month break from an outside post last week and should be all systems go tonight in what could be his final race before the Jan. 15 sale. (1) MORE THAN TALK scored at first asking for the Burke barn; dangerous again. (8) ANOTHER CHAPTER debuts for new connections after a solid qualifier. (9) HIGH GLIDER could be a player if Marcus Miller can navigate the outside post.

Race 8

(5) CHEYENNE ROBIN took the inside path initially and had to alter course in the stretch while making her first start in two months. That eighth-place finish earned her class relief tonight to face a field that she should defeat. BTW, she is in the sale as well. (4) SHEEZA SHARK N is far from the mare she was when first arriving in the U.S. a while back, but this is still a very winnable spot for her when right. (1) BESTGIRLFRIENDEVER faced traffic and finished under a hard hold last week. If only she found an easier spot this time.

Race 9

(4) P L ICABOD is one of those horses I’m picking on top because he is the most logical selection, but I can’t say I’m excited about playing him here. He should head to the top and have a big shot but is far from reliable. (5) ROUNDTOWN ROCKER jumped it off at Monticello and now returns to the big track. On paper his form is suspect, but Napolitano has a way of waking up horses like this one. (6) ROSSINI steps up off a sharp victory. (9) ALEXANDER HANOVER is down in class with a bad post; maybe.

Race 10

(2) COMMENTARY was dealt a tough post in his debut for this barn down at Pompano. I’m not sure how he’ll handle the drastic climate change but any improvement should make him the one to beat. (1) TEASIN N PLEASIN raced well here in early December against similar company. (6) A JERSEY CONTRACT has some early speed and does seem to be in cheap.

Race 11

(10) VOICE OF TRUTH dealt with traffic trouble and got free too late last week. After missing most of 2017, he now has four starts under his belt and I’m hoping he can tap into his sizable back class. (1) YO CHEYENNE ROCKY has put together two consecutive solid efforts and seems likes a must use as the favorite. (3) LAST SHOT LEETON has some early speed in his arsenal and is coming off a decent performance last out.

Race 12

(4) HERETIC FRANCO N closed pretty well last time and faces a very dull field here. Hopefully Blumenfeld will send this mare to the top. (7) TRUTH ISALWAYSBEST gets a new driver and is facing softer. (1) MOJARRA HANOVER should have won easily last week and simply couldn’t pass. (8) DUNESIDE LIFE could be interesting if she makes the top and is left alone.

Race 13

(10) ACES AND EIGHTS qualified in good order and is certainly fast enough to wire this dull field from post 10; taking a shot. (2) O’DOYLE RULES was racing well with a catch-driver in the bike and picks one up here. (4) BROADWAY FANTASY raced evenly versus much better a week ago.

Race 14

(3) ZANE HANOVER won easily last time and should be able to handle this class bump. (7) GIMME SOME LOVIN’ finished second behind Purity on a night where she came to play; expecting a strong mile. (6) BRAIDA HANOVER couldn’t rally from an outside post after chasing slow fractions; interesting longshot play. (5) PIRAEUS has been racing very consistently of late. (9) MONICA GALLAGHER has the early speed to make some noise.
