Captain Luke and Ken Hanover were the winners of the Grade 2 Sam McKee Memorial divisions for open pacers on Saturday afternoon at the Meadowlands. In the first flight, which carried a purse of $131,650, Captain Luke, driven by Dexter Dunn, sat in the pocket behind Coaches Corner (Jason Bartlett) through fractions of 27, 54 and 1:21, tipped out in the lane and vaulted to the victory by three-quarters of a length in 1:47 3/5. Coaches Corner was second over Muskateer Hanover (David Miller), with Bythemissal (Yannick Gingras) fourth and Oakwood Ardan IR (Jordan Stratton) fifth. "Andrew (trainer Andrew Harris) said to me going out onto the track the horse is in good form, just hasn't really worked out for him. We got a good trip today," said Dunn. "He swelled up coming off that last turn. Once we gave him clear air, he came home good. I thought we could be getting locked in (on the last turn); it could be tight. He was on the left line a touch, too, so I would have preferred to come out with him. We got that opportunity." Harris trains Captain Luke, a 4-year-old son of Captaintreacherous, and also co-owns him with William Pollock and Bruce Areman. He has a summary of 7-9-6 from 40 starts, has earned $840,020 and paid $13.60 to win. "Dexter gave him a perfect trip, and I couldn't thank him enough for that," remarked Harris. "He's been super-sharp. Last time, he just kind of got stuck with a bad trip. He's been racing great all year, and I couldn't be happier with him." ► Sign up for our FREE DRF Harness Digest Newsletter Huntinthelastdolar (Bartlett) chopped out the quarter in 27 1/5 in the other $130,400 section and then yielded to a pocket-pulling Captain Albano (Todd McCarthy) nearing the 55 1/5 half. Captain Albano stayed in front to three-quarters in 1:22 4/5 but was under attack from a first-over Sabonis (Dunn) and Ken Hanover (D. Miller) was second-over. In the lane Ken Hanover charged by the battling leaders and went on to tally by a length and a half in 1:49. Huntinthelastdolar wound up second from Sabonis as Captain Albano just held off Ruthless Hanover (Andy McCarthy) for fourth. "The fractions were more to his liking than in the Haughton (on July 12 when Ken Hanover tired to seventh after a tough trip). There were fast fractions, and they kept on going. Today, he had a perfect trip," winning trainer Roland Mallar remarked post-race. "David gave him a perfect drive, and it worked out great. When they turned for home, David looked like he was sitting on him. He kicked in pretty good. "He's been winning, and he kind of knows it. He's been sound, healthy and happy, so we'll keep doing what we're doing I think." Mallar added that Ken Hanover is likely to race again in two weeks in the Always B Miki Invitational at Pocono and has other stakes engagements that include the Jim Ewart Memorial at Scioto, the Dayton Pacing Derby at Hollywood Dayton and the Breeders Crown. A 5-year-old Captaintreacherous stallion, Ken Hanover is owned by Mallar in partnership with Patrick Leavitt, William Jordan and Dennis Osterholt. Ken Hanover made his 19th trip to the winner's circle, he has now banked $935,031 and returned $6.00 to win.
