Meadowlands: Analysis for Friday 7/21

Derick Giwner|Jul 19, 2023
Meadowlands logo (new)

CHAMPIONSHIP MEET STATS: 273-85-52-37 / $460.50 (-$85.50)

BEST BETS: 20-11-2-1 / $34.90 (-$5.10)

SPOT PLAYS: 20-5-6-0 / $45.00 (+$5.00)

BEST BET: ALLEGIANT (4th)

SPOT PLAY: BOHEMIAN HANOVER (7th)

Race 1: Meadowlands Amateur Drivers Club 1 - Pick 5

(5) MOONWARDS HANOVER rallied nicely from the back last time but more importantly he has some early speed in his arsenal in a race that seems to lack much pace on paper and picks up a driver that likes to gun to the front. (2) PAN STREET USA has been steady of late and should be able to stick close from the inside post. (9) PERSEVERANT is the other horse in the field with clear early speed. Can he clear the top easily from the outside?

Race 2: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot

(1) MY WAY burned plenty of money when he broke in his career debut. Going back to his qualifiers, everything was super, so let's expect a quick turnaround at better odds. (5) ROBINHOOD caught some faster foes last weekend than he faces tonight; threat. (2) PANTORAN was somehow bet down to 1-5 despite a three-week absence. As I'm writing this the Svanstedt barn is stuck in a 1-for-28 skid, so maybe see how he does Wednesday to Friday before considering this son of Walner.

Race 3: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot - Survivor 7

(2) CALATRAVA is a filly that certainly impressed me in the mornings and she had absolutely no chance with a conservative steer in her first pari-mutuel start. We should see what she's made of tonight at a healthy mutuel. (1) SUNKIST BEAUTY scored the lone victory for Team Svanstedt in a week's time, so that's saying something. She’s clearly got ability. (5) TANDEM HANOVER went to the well again on the engine and couldn't last. Expect new tactics this week. (3) WALCANGO has posted two solid efforts in two starts.

Race 4: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot

(5) ALLEGIANT had a tough assignment from the outside and raced very well to be second behind the #1 in race 3. This looks like a race where she can grab control or sit the pocket. (8) SPECIAL TALENT raced well with a strong kicker in her debut but seems very likely to get another conservative steer from the outside. (6) SPY COAST finished with plenty of trot last time.

Race 5: Meadowlands Amateur Drivers Club 1

(1) DEERFIELD BEACH hardly inspires confidence but has been racing well lately. (2) SPIRIT OF TRUTH drops out of the MADC2 class after taking some air versus that better group. (6) ROCK TO GLORY scored in this class last time. For what it's worth, I'll probably key a couple of the 2-year-olds in the Pick 5 and go ALL here.

Race 6: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot - $50K GTD Pick 4

(6) TWIN B SHOWBOAT got rough on the final turn and ultimately made a break last week but let's not forget that he made two moves early in the mile. That aggressive steer tells me there is talent here and the price should be plenty good. (5) LEGAL SCHOLAR has raced well on and slightly off the pace. Sears joining the team is an interesting addition. (8) STORMCLOUDFASHION has a win and second already in his career; outside post is the only issue. (3) SIG SAUER hails from the Daley barn and they've been winning 2YO races in bunches lately; McCarthy’s choice over #5.

Race 7: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot

(6) BOHEMIAN HANOVER was green in her debut mile as she gapped the pocket and took some time to hit her best stride in the stretch. With that learning mile in hand she could be ready for much more. (1) SOIREE HANOVER uncorked a powerful stretch burst to win last weekend; big threat. (5) FANCY NANCY LOPEZ finished less than two lengths behind the top pick last time.

Race 8: Meadowlands Amateur Drivers Club 1 - Pick 6

(10) FERDINAND A has blazing early speed to get into position and a strong résumé when against MADC1 types. (1) TAKEITTOTHEFACE should enjoy the move to an inside post after an even effort from the nine-hole. (9) SHORTYS GIRL is another who has prospered when dropping to the lower amateur level, but she lacks the gate acceleration of #10.

Race 9: Non-winners $7,500 (NW L2 $8,251) in last 4/TM 82.5 (NW L2 83) or less

(4) MON AMOUR gets a bit of class relief against a relatively evenly-matched field; narrow edge. (6) CANTERBURY HANOVER is clearly fast enough to go with these if she has no issues with her elders. (5) SHINKANSEN decides to gun down the road and not look back every five starts or so; capable.

Race 10: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot - $50K GTD Pick 4

(2) DUKE OF WALNER was a victim of circumstance as the trip just didn't pan out in his career debut. Let's look for a bit more aggression from him tonight. (7) HANKINS HANOVER has been very good in both starts but might not be as forwardly placed here as they look to put an easier mile in him before the final in a couple of weeks. (6) MR GRANT made a monster recovery last Friday. Let's see what he can do if he stays flat.

Race 11: Non-winners $3,000 (NW L2 $3,560) in last 4/TM 77 or less

(2) HUSTLENOMICS moves into a new barn and takes a shot on the big track in hopes in makes a difference. Four-year-old looks like a good fit here. (6) BABY TAKE A VOW is another 3-year-old filly on the card that is seemingly fast enough but facing older. (7) MARTY DE VIE moves into the Estrada barn and that angle always merits some consideration.

Race 12: Non-winners $14,000 (NW 2L4 $15,400) in last 4 or 10 races life/TM 88 (NW L2 88.5) or less

(3) IWON’T BACKDOWN AS drops out of stakes company and has a decided post edge tonight. (9) SOUTHWIND TYRION and (10) LOOKS LIKE MONI also exit races versus better foes and either could score here.

[DRF BETS: Wager on tonight's Meadowlands card at DRF Bets.com!]

Race 13: Non-winners $5,000 (NW L2 $5,500) in last 4/TM 80.5 (NW L2/2L4 81/81.65) or less

(6) HEAVENS SHOWGIRL A scored at first asking at The Meadowlands and anything close to a repeat effort should make her tough. (5) WATCH ME NOW N seemingly has a new excuse for failure each week; one more shot? (2) TO ALL A GOODNIGHT chased the top pick home last time. Three-year-old is going to step up sooner or later.

Race 14: Non-winners 2 (NW L2 3) or $20,000 (NW L2 $30,000) life/Maidens draw inside

(5) FRIENDS AFTER SIX has been the most consistent of this group lately and she should be forwardly placed. (3) CRAZYLAND raced better with Lasix added but got hung to dry last time. (7) HARDROCKCAFE wasn't bad on arrival here while getting caught in a pretty quick mile. (10) ROSITA has turned the corner lately but must find a decent trip from the outside post. (8) BINGHAM PLACE has been slow to get going. Perhaps the recent break in action will help the cause.
