Meadowlands: Analysis for Friday 7/14

Derick Giwner|Jul 12, 2023
Meadowlands logo (new)

CHAMPIONSHIP MEET STATS: 245-81-46-29 / $413.90 (-$76.10)

BEST BETS: 18-11-2-0 / $34.90 (-1.10)

SPOT PLAYS: 18-4-6-0 / $40.80 (+$4.80)

BEST BET: DUKE OF WALNER (4th)

SPOT PLAY: ICE CREAM (11th)

Race 1: Meadowlands Amateur Drivers Club 2 - Pick 5

(6) ROSEY TIME tried to rally from the back in her last appearance here but was hampered by chasing a very slow pace. That won't be a problem in this spot with lots of early speed players signed on. (1) GOTTA MINUTE N is clearly sharp and capable of sitting mid-pack and pouncing from the inside draw. (9) CLAYTONS BETTOR N is the speed of the speed. If somehow he loops the field to the front he should get a big piece of the exotics.

Race 2: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot

(3) CLASSIC LANDING looked beat at one point last week but showed heart to dig in for the win. He has early speed and a start under his belt to give him an added edge here. (1) MR GRANT has done everything right thus far and seems to be well on his way to easily earning back his bargain $18,000 yearling price. (6) CABALLERO has been a bit sluggish in the middle part of the mile but seems to finish strong. I wouldn't be shocked if Smedshammer had him ready to fire.

Race 3: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Pace - Survivor 7

(6) BONAPARTE has progressively improved with each qualifier and now seems up to speed and ready to go with what looks like just an ok group. (2) DIVINE COSMO is another with a trio of qualifiers and the last was his fastest; contender. (1) MR THREE O FIVE finished up willingly in his lone morning effort. Lazarurs colt is a half-brother to $772K earner Peaky Sneaky.

Race 4: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot

(3) DUKE OF WALNER had to wait for congestion to clear and was absolutely full of trot in his last qualifier. This colt represents the mare's first try with the Walner line and that could be the difference maker. (1) MAGIC HILL trotted a straight line with a fast final quarter in his latest qualifier. (2) ROCKET MAN HILL was an easy winner last time at Gaitway and you may get value on him here.

Race 5: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot

This field has plenty potentially talented youngsters. While still green, (3) MARS HILL seems loaded with ability. He was completely wrapped up in victory in his first qualifier then went on a speed mission and didn't tire too badly last time. (6) MY WAY absolutely cruised in his latest qualifier and this barn tends to send them out ready to fire. Note that he's a full brother to Hambletonian prospect Oh Well. (4) DIPLOMACY finished up willingly in both of his morning efforts but this full brother to Looks Like Moni ($344K) seems likely to be handled conservatively. (8) LORD RITCHIE looks just ok at first glance, but this barn was on fire with 2-year-olds last week.

Race 6: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Pace - $50K GTD Pick 4

(7) LOVEVOLUTION paced a 1:56 3/5 mile at Harrington, which is pretty nice for a first-time starter at that oval. This is the mare that gave us $1.5 million winner See You At Peelers a while back and notice Lovevolution’s full sister was a 1:52 4/5 winner at age 2. (2) ODDS ON STENO and (1) MARY OF BETHANY both figure to be players off solid morning miles.

Race 7: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot

(8) TANDEM HANOVER lived up to her advance billing with a powerful victory on the engine. There's no reason to believe she won't use similar tactics here and dominate again. (3) SOIREE HANOVER sprinted home in her qualifier. Here's another switching to the Walner line trying to find lightning in a bottle. (5) COLD SNAPS ships down off a convincing victory and still may be overlooked a bit.

Race 8: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Trot - Pick 6

(5) HANKINS HANOVER finished well to just miss in his career debut and don't be shocked if we see a bit more from him early with that start under his belt. (6) ROBINHOOD shocked everyone when he swept the field to win at 105-1 last time. You won't get that price again but he still could pay double-digits. (7) LEGAL SCHOLAR was a huge overlay last week and almost pulled off the upset. I wouldn't give up on him too quickly.

Race 9: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot

(9) DOLCE AMARA absolutely powered home on her own to win her latest qualifier. The post isn't ideal so demand at least 5-1 if you like her because an off the pace trip might be coming. (2) DREAMING OF SYDNEY went when asked on her most recent morning effort. The times look slow on this gal but I think there could be more here than meets the eye. (6) SPECIAL TALENT is a full sister to a filly in Special Way that could be the Hambletonian favorite if she enters. Her qualifier was clearly good but I fear she'll be a big underlay.

Race 10: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO C&G Pace - $50K GTD Pick 4

(6) BETTER IS NICE pulled the pocket and won under a hold in his first qualifier and followed it up with a very strong mile mostly on the engine. Alagna trainee looks to be the real deal. (1) WISH YOU WELL rallied nicely at 17-1 for the win at Philly and any improvement here would make him a serious player. (2) CAVIART JUSTICE has been coming home well in the morning and finished under a hold late most recently.

Race 11: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot

(7) ICE CREAM lost to a pretty nice foe in Tandem Hanover, so no shame in that. Walner filly figures to be heading to the front here and could have a tactical edge. (8) BOHEMIAN HANOVER qualified very nicely in both starts and the only question here is whether she'll be put in play. (2) ONE WORLD made great strides in her second qualifier. She bore in a bit through the lane so maybe we see some equipment change now.

Race 12: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Trot

(8) ALLEGIANT is off a 1:53 2/5 win at Oak Grove and I couldn’t find any fault with her as she trotted smoothly every step. If she can come close to reproducing that effort this group is in trouble. (9) CALATRAVA was absolutely loaded with trot when clear in the stretch last time. Team Bongiorno seems to have a talented daughter of Tactical Landing here and the only issue is whether she'll be put in play from the outside. (1) BLAZING DEO could be tighter in her second start after tackling some good-looking foes in start one. (7) HARLEY QUINN finished up willingly in both starts. That she is a full sister to Ramona Hill (1:50 1/5, $1.3 million) might mean a shorter price than warranted.

Race 13: NJ Sire Stakes 2YO Filly Pace

(5) WHERE'S LARRY has performed well in both her morning efforts and should provide value with Patrick Ryder driving. The 29-year-old brought home a nice longshot 2yo in Pennsylvania the other day. (7) PULP FICTION remains undefeated in qualifiers and you have to like that she shows early speed. (2) ODDS ON SELENIUM battled and came out ahead in her latest qualifier with Dunn added to the team.

Race 14: Non-winners 2 (NW L2 3) races or $20,000 (NW L2 $30,000) life/Maidens draw inside

(2) TE AMO LINDY was a good second behind a runaway winner in his 3-year-old debut. He should be ready for more tonight and seems to have a big shot to finally pick up his first win. (6) LITTLE EXPENSIVE falls under the title of "show 'em if you got 'em" as far as the Hambletonian trail goes. I'd expect him to be put in play to see what's in the tank. (1) ALL A TWITTER chased home an accomplished trotter in a good time at Magical Acres last time. (3) QUEBEC HANOVER has proven capable of sticking close and getting checks.
