Scheduled originally to be sold at the Summer Mixed Sale on Sunday, the owners of Allywag Hanover obviously knew the value of the 4-year-old by Captaintreacherous and were rewarded on Saturday night when he posted an upset in the first of two $265,400 divisions of the William R. Haughton Memorial at the Meadowlands. Driven by Todd McCarthy in the field of ten, Allywag Hanover showed a new wrinkle to his arsenal by blasting from mid-pack right to the front heading into the first turn. McCarthy was able to string out Backstreet Shadow some before yielding in a 26 second opening quarter. Tim Tetrick had Backstreet Shadow in control but had to give way when Angers Bayama and Andrew McCarthy made a bold second move. Angers Bayama hit the half in 53 1/5 and then met stern pressure from Ruthless Hanover during a spirited third quarter. Angers Bayama was in control at three-quarters in 1:20, with horses fanning all over the track for a shot in the stretch. While Backstreet Shadow was able to find a clear lane from early stretch, Allywag Hanover had to zigzag for room. Eventually, Todd McCarthy found a lane to the inside, and the Brett Pelling-trained Allywag Hanover just exploded to pace past Backstreet Shadow near the wire to score in 1:47 1/5, a career-best clocking. Backstreet Shadow settled for second, and Brassy Hanover rallied wide for third. Owned by Allywag Stable, Allywag Hanover was a winner for the fourth time in 2021 and returned $12.40 as a 5-1 offering. "He got a little hot on me sitting in," said Todd McCarthy. "I never left the gate with him like that before." Cattlewash made it back-to-back major stakes victories, following up his Graduate Series final score a week ago by taking the second $265,400 Haughton stanza for driver David Miller. Cattlewash, a 4-year-old by Somebeachsomewhere, scored over a rain-soaked surface in 1:47 3/5. Miller was assertive from the outset, using the whip to energize Cattlewash and to have the stallion overtake Shake That House into the opening bend. With This Is The Plan leaving on the outside and Tattoo Artist between horses, Miller did everything he could to set Tattoo Artist and Todd McCarthy and pave the way for stablemate This Is The Plan to take control. Folowing the 26 second opening quarter, This Is The Plan and Yannick Gingras took control but were put to immediate pressure by Workin Ona Mystery, who pressed the pace through a 53 second half and 1:20 1/5 three-quarters. At headstretch Workin Ona Mystery took the turn wide, forcing Tattoo Artist four-deep and opening a huge hole for Cattlewash to utilize. The Ron Burke-trained Cattlewash instantly picked up the bit and wore down This Is The Plan. Shake That House and Andy McCarthy found room inside and made a race of it but settled for second. Bllack Hole, with Tim Tetrick, found room late and flew in the final yards for third. Owned and bred by William Donovan, Cattlewash became the sport's newest millionaire with the win. He returned $5.80 as the second choice in the field.
