McPeek may try Blackout Time, Taken by the Wind in turf stakes

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Trainer Kenny McPeek said Blackout Time and Taken by the Wind, who both exit 3-year-old preps, could make a surface switch for upcoming stakes at Churchill Downs.

“We might shift to turf on both horses,” McPeek said.

Blackout Time is under consideration for the Grade 1, $1 million American Turf for 3-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles on May 2. Last year, he was second to eventual champion Ted Noffey in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland and this year ran fourth in the Rebel and fifth in the Arkansas Derby.

“We may very well run in the American Turf,” McPeek said of the son of Not This Time.

Taken by the Wind was third in the Grade 2 Fantasy at Oaklawn in her last start March 28. Earlier in her career, the daughter of Rock Your World won the Grade 3 Pocahontas at Churchill and the Silverbulletday at Fair Grounds.

“I’m going to nominate her to the Edgewood at Churchill,” McPeek said.

The Grade 2, $600,000 Edgewood is for 3-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on turf May 1.
