McKee breaks Cauthen record

Marty McGee|Sep 02, 2002

CINCINNATI - John McKee on Sunday broke a 26-year-old track record held by Hall of Fame jockey Steve Cauthen by surpassing the 109-victory total for an apprentice rider at River Downs.

McKee, on Junaluska, posted his 110th win of the season in the fourth race. McKee also won the eighth race Sunday with Step Into the Fire, giving him 111 wins. McKee won three times on Monday, closing day at River Downs, to finish with 114 as the meet's top rider.

McKee, 21, was honored Sunday at River with the Rodney Dickens Award. The award is named for the late apprentice who died in a 1991 spill at Sportsman's Park and is given each year to an apprentice.
