McGee: Santa Anita pick five for Sunday, May 10
I’ll take a shot at the pick five by singling the Brothers Desormeaux in Race 4 as they team together with ATTACK (2), a $40,000 maiden claimer dropping from the maiden special weight ranks and into a soft spot while appearing to have an edge in Beyer Speed Figures, post position, and tactics. That reduces the spread to four races and a number of “go-againsts” who might produce a big payoff if they all get beat, as hoped.
In the first race, I’ll take a stand against the Hollendorfer-trained MINSTER’SADVENTURE (6) stepping outside the statebred ranks. In the second, the rail-drawn filly JAN’S SPIRIT (1) is the most obvious omission as she’ll have to prove she can do better for new connections. In the third, let’s see if we can’t beat FIVE PALMS (1) as he tries grass for the first time as an 8-5 morning-line favorite. And in the fifth, OM (4), the long-ago conqueror of American Pharoah, is going to have to run better than he did in the San Pedro to go through his first allowance condition.
Here’s the ticket:
R1 – 1, 2, 3
R2 – 4, 5, 6
R3 – 5, 6, 7, 8
R4 – 2
R5 – 1, 2, 3, 5
50-cent ticket = $72
