McGee: Keeneland pick five play for Saturday, Oct. 19, 2019

I’ll try to build an insurmountable lead after the first few races today at Keeneland, then play with house money the rest of the day. I’ll be placing win bets on each of the first three races, then tying them all together in rolling doubles and pick-3s, the early pick-4 (R2-5), and the pick-5 (displayed here). If one of them happens to get beat, well, just start anew.

Here’s the layout:

Race 1: A sluggish start in her latest really cost Sterling Miss (5), who has shown herself more than worthy in the allowance and upper-claiming ranks. A more alert break should give Jimmy Graham plenty to work with today, and Sterling Miss is liable to loom large from the opening steps when aggressively spotted back for this $50k tag by Tom Amoss, who shows superior stats in the categories that apply.

Race 2: More than a few of the opponents for Colonel Pike (6) in this open $7,500 claiming sprint are exiting conditioned, or “beaten,” races, whereas he showed every sign of rounding into peak form for Tommy Vance when a better-than-looked fifth in what was a legit $7,500 race at Churchill last month. He’s 10-1 on the Kee M/L and the Hermis™ best bet in our DRF selections box.

Race 3: If ever there was a horse who had “needed last” written all over her, it’s Ultimate Mo (7), who was third behind a couple of these same N2X fillies when making her first start in nearly five months last month at Churchill for her HOF trainer. Substantial improvement is forthcoming today from her favorable outside post.

Race 4: Seems that you can quickly whittle down this MSW turf race at the infrequently run distance of 1 3/16 miles to three contenders, with Compliant (3) a deserving favorite for Johnny V. and Chad over Better Tapit (1) and Red Sorrell (7).

Race 5: You can’t single ‘em all, so let’s spread here by using two-thirds of the field in this MSW 2yo race while hoping to catch a price: Chitto (1), Tranquility Base (2), Maximiliano (3), Peerless Brown (4), Bigmancan (6), Elusive d’Oro (10), Numidian (11), and Baudette Blizzard (12).
